Wines from the Bairrada Region

Bairrada is a wine producing region, full of vitality and history and that seeks a place in the future.
It was, in the past, a land of passage and conquests, of fights between Christians and Arabs at the time of the formation of Portugal, when the capital of the kingdom was Coimbra and the way to affirmation was south. It was also a land of defense of independence threatened by Napoleon's invading armies, held in the Bussaco mountains.

A little bit of history

Bairrada

Portuguese Antiquity

Vine growing approved by D. Afonso Henriques

It was in 1137 that D. Afonso Henriques approved the growing of vines on the Herdade de Eiras, "under the public road from Vilarinum to Mount Buzaco" - already at the time applying a tax of 25% of production, a tradition of fiscal alacrity that has unfortunately perpetuated itself.

What to expect from Bairrada?

Flat and coastal region

It is a flat and coastal region that develops in a maritime coastal strip, of marked Atlantic influence, with abundant rainfall and mild average temperatures.
You can expect light and elegant wines, both still and sparkling, which have been a tradition in the production of these lands for many years.

Tasting notes

Red Wines

Garnet to ruby color, taking brownish nuances with aging, with a fruity aroma when young, evolving with age to more complex aromas (bouquet), of harmonious flavor where its solid structure stands out.

Common grape varieties

Baga, Alfrocheiro, Tinta Pinheira and Touriga Nacional.

White Wines

Loaded citrine color, sometimes with greenish tinges, fruity aroma when young, evolving to a resinous note when aged, harmonious, fresh and persistent flavor. Two distinct glasses are presented, the first for a young white and the second for a white fermented in wood.

Common grape varieties

Arinto, Fernão Pires, Bical, Cercial and Rabo-de-Ovelha.

Sparkling Wines

Produced by the classic method or by fermentation in the bottle, they can be, regarding the degree of sweetness, brut, dry or medium-dry, belonging mostly to the brut class. The younger ones have floral or fruity aromas, while the older ones denote aromas coming from a more or less prolonged contact with the lees of the second fermentation.

Seal of Guarantee:
