STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. -- As part of The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company Inc. (A&P) bankruptcy, there are at least five Island-based Pathmark stores that have either been purchased by other supermarket retailers or are still up for grabs.
After filing for bankruptcy for the second time in five years, A&P announced in July that it will close 25 stores and sell another 120 supermarkets for $600 million.
Amid the July announcement came a flurry of rumors about the fate of the various Staten Island stores that fall under the A&P umbrella, which include all Waldbaums and Pathmark stores in the borough.
While an A&P spokesperson declined to comment on the fate of the Island stores, the Advance has learned the status of the following Pathmarks:
-100 Greaves Lane, Great Kills: The store is one of 23 supermarkets purchased by Key Food.
"Key Food is proud to add the A&P stores to our supermarket family and to continue to serve the communities where these stores are located. The customers of these stores deserve a high-quality neighborhood grocery store and we are thrilled to be able to play that role," said Dean Janeway, Key Food's chief executive officer
He added that Key Food will preserve approximately 1,800 jobs of current A&P employees at the 23 stores.
Key Food expects to complete the purchase of all 23 of the A&P stores by mid-November.
-1351 Forest Ave., Port Richmond:Stop & Shop Supermarket Company LLC will acquire 25 New York-based A&P stores -- including this Pathmark -- for $146 million.
While Stop & Shop has started the conversion of A&P various stores, there is not yet a time frame for when the Forest Avenue store will be transferred, according to a Stop & Shop spokeswoman.
-2660 Hylan Blvd., New Dorp:According to the UFCW, Local 1500, the New York Grocers Union, this Pathmark at has yet to be auctioned.
-2730 Arthur Kill Rd., Rossville: The store was up for auction, but it has been adjourned, according toUFCW, Local 1500 website. This means it either didn't receive a bid during the auction process, or the judge overruled the price of the bid, said a source close to the process. Such properties will likely be re-entered into the auction process.
-2875 Richmond Ave., New Springville: This store was purchased by the property owner, Kimco Realty.
"We are just waiting on bankruptcy court approval. We are currently talking to other grocers and retailers who have expressed interest in the location," said Joshua Weinkranz, president, Northeast region of Kimco Realty Corp.
As to what will happen to the employees at that supermarket, he said "Kimco is not involved in the decisions regarding the current employees."
WALDBAUMS
A&P announced on its website that the Waldbaums at 375 Tompkins Ave., Rosebank was sold to Key Food. However, a spokeswoman for Key Food said that was "announced prematurely by A&P and never happened."
