Our Purpose

The Legislative Bureau of the House of Representatives ("Legislative Bureau") wasestablished in 1948, based on the Diet Law. Its purpose has been to assist Members of the House of Representatives in their legislative activities.

The Legislative Bureau consists of a staff of 88 persons, which are divided into16 divisions.

Our Functions

The Legislative Bureau performs two main functions:

  • to assist the House Members in the drafting of bills and amendments to bills. We consistently provide support for them from the establishment of the policy contents to the enactment of the bills and amendments.
  • to investigate and respond to inquiries concerning legal matters by the House Members.

For more information on our organisation and examples of bill titles each division concerns, seeOrganisation of the Legislative Bureau.
