開催概要

熱狂的な人気を誇る『攻殻機動隊』の作者・士郎正宗は、1985年にSF漫画『アップルシード』でメジャーデビュー、1989年に『攻殻機動隊』の連載を開始しています。当時はまだ世に浸透していなかった先端技術を独自の感覚で取り入れた、情報化社会の現代を予見しているかのような世界観は、多くの人たちを魅了してきました。

細部まで描きこまれた絵、膨大な情報で組まれたプロット、〈欄外〉にまで及ぶ作家の言葉が、作品に熱量を持たせるとともに、読む人の想像力をかきたてます。哲学的な探求が織り込まれる士郎正宗の世界観に、多くのクリエイターが影響を受け、様々なジャンルで作品を生み出し続けています。

超巨人級のコンピュータ〈ネメシス〉が政治を担う世界を描いた初期作品集『ブラックマジック』。 第五次大戦後、廃墟となった街で生きていたSWATのデュナンと全身サイボーグのブリアレオスの姿を描くSFアクション『アップルシード』。「警察戦車隊」所属のレオナと愛機の小型戦車・ボナパルトの、悪党・武悪一味との戦いをコミカルに描く『ドミニオン』。首相直轄の攻性組織「公安９課」の戦いを描く『攻殻機動隊』。超古代の魔術師たちと召喚された神々が「仙術九頭龍」をめぐって争うファンタジー作品『仙術超攻殻ＯＲＩＯＮ』。

本展では、多様な広がりをみせる作品群と現在の活動までを、〈アナログ原稿〉〈デジタル出力原稿〉で辿るとともに、作家の蔵書やコメントもふんだんに紹介し、「士郎正宗」のパーソナルな部分にも迫ります。開館30周年を迎える世田谷文学館が、これまで取り組んできた〈漫画〉〈SF〉展示の集大成となる、「士郎正宗」初の大規模展覧会をお楽しみください。

士郎正宗（しろう・まさむね）

兵庫県生まれ。漫画家・イラストレーター。1980年にマンガやイラストの分野で活躍開始、1985年に『アップルシード』で商業デビュー。1989年に代表作『攻殻機動隊』の連載を開始。アニメ作品『ブラックマジックMｰ66』には共同監督として参加している。そのほか、ゲームや画集などさまざまな制作分野で活躍。

Exhibition Overview

Shirow Masamune, creator of the immensely popular mangaThe Ghost in the Shell, made his major debut with Appleseed in 1985, going on to launch The Ghost in the Shell series in 1989. He adopted futuristic technology that had yet to spread in the public conscious with his unique perspective, and his worldview, one that seemed to predict our modern information society, fascinated countless readers. His highly detailed drawings, the immense volume of information in the plotting, and his text that escapes beyond the borders, brought passion to his works and stirred the imagination of the readers. The worldview of Shirow Masamune, woven with his deep philosophical explorations, influenced numerous subsequent creators, giving rise to works in a wide range of genres.

Black Magic, an early story collection, depicted a world governed by a super-giant computer called Nemesis.Appleseed is an SF action manga that depicts former SWAT officers Deunan and Briareos, the latter a full-body cyborg, as they survive in an abandoned city after the end of World War Five.Dominion is a work that comically depicts Leona and her beloved squad of Bonaparte-class small sized tanks in their struggle against a gang of villains and warriors.The Ghost in the Shell depicts the struggles of Public Security Section 9 under the direct control of the Prime Minister.Orion is a fantasy work that depicts the struggles of extremely ancient wizards and the gods they summon surrounding the magical nine-headed Nāga.

This exhibition traces the works of Shirow Masamune, covering both his Analog Manuscripts and Digital Manuscripts, through his wide range of output up to his current activities, accompanied by a plethora of books and comments from the artist, and even touching on his personal side. Enjoy the first large scale exhibition by Shirow Masamune, an amalgamation of the manga and SF exhibits held by the Setagaya Literary Museum to date, as we approach our 30th anniversary.

Shirow Masamune
Manga artist and illustrator Shirow Masamune was born in Hyogo Prefecture. He began producing manga and illustrations in 1980 and made his commercial debut withAppleseed in 1985.In 1989, he began producing his most well-known manga series,The Ghost in the Shell. He served as co-director of the anime workBlack Magic M-66. He is also active in a variety of other fields, including games and art books.
