Kovvasi Somda alias Mukesh (33), Konta ‘area commander’ of the Dandakaranya-Sukma Zone of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), was arrested by the Chintoor Police in the Kalleru Forest area on the outskirts of Kalleru village in the Chintoor Agency in Alluri Sitarama Raju District of Andhra Pradesh on January 24, reports The Hindu. Somda was arrested while he was allegedly on his way to plant explosives targeting Security Forces (SFs) involved in combing operations. Police and Central Reserve Protection Force (CRPF) teams recovered five electric detonators, two hand grenades, iron pieces, slurry sticks, batteries, cordex wire, and electrical wire, which were intended to be used to kill SFs. A search is on for a ‘sympathiser’ who was accompanying Somda at the time of the latter’s arrest, Police said. Somda joined the CPI-Maoist in 2014. Sodi Pojja alias Lalith, a leader of the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC) of the Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist), was arrested during a joint operation in the forest area near Cheruvu Gumpa village in Alluri Sitharama Raju District of Andhra Pradesh on January 30, where the accused was seen carrying explosive materials such as grenades and pamphlets, reports Deccan Chronicle. Sodi was involved in several encounters, and in one case, he sustained a bullet injury during a 2019 attack where two other Maoists named Deepak and Rathu were killed. He was also involved in the 2015 attack in Dubbamarka, where two Police personnel were killed. In 2017, he was involved in an exchange of fire that took place between Security Forces (SFs) and Maoists in the forest area between Musalimadugu and Istanuvagu under Gollapalli Police Station limits. The investigation revealed that following his injury in 2019, he received medical treatment at Sannu’s home, a Dandakaranya Kisan Majdoor Sangathan (DKMS), a Maoist front, committee member in Kolanur village, until March 2021.
