The matches between the continental champions of Europe and South America,of which this was the second and last edition, were (together with thetournaments in Saudi Arabia) precursors ofFIFA's Confederations' Cup.

In the end    it was left to Argentina's 1990 World Cup hero, goalkeeper Sergio    Goycochea, again as he made two saves in the penalty shoot-out while    Schmeichel saved one shot.
