A stark contrast is drawn between those who've emerged as steely leaders and others shown signs of buckling under pressure. There are also two major reveals that could not be further apart on the good news/bad news spectrum.

Negan's split-second decision kicked off this episode in fine style, and even though it was generally fairly messy and chaotic, enough of the beats landed to make it feel thrilling, despite an uneven sound mix and some occasionally awkward editing.

There are some missteps in terms of pacing and plot beats. But there's a good sense by the end of the episode that the dramatic terrain and key lines of conflict for the show's endgame have been fleshed out.

Even as things ramp up towards the end, certain elements best left buried occasionally rear their head, threatening to drag down what we hope could still turn out to be The Walking Dead's best season since its heyday.

I can't count all the times The Walking Dead has disappointed me. I think the show has infuriated me even more so. But I don't think I've even been so disgusted, so disappointed, and so fed up as I am after tonight's episode.
