I found it slow, boring and full of clichés. SPOILER ALERT: Typical movie/ series where a troubled beautiful girl involves a good kid in a stupid situation and he ends up paying gor his stupidity. I mean, since the beginning, the whole situation is messed up and the girl yelled and stinks like problems. I don’t know why and how The Night Of slipped under my radar in terms of television to watch. Maybe cause the year it came out was also the year of the OJ Simpson miniseries, and also maybe the vibe of The Night Of maybe reminded me of True Detective (I love that show, but maybe I didn’t want to watch a “copycat” show). But, luckily, I found a Blu Ray copy of The Night Of at Deja Vu Discs, and binged through it this week. And I’m really glad I did. We have to start off with the excellent and incredibly tense and anxious first episode. Its very rare for a show to really sink it self into the viewer and make you understand what the show will be like, but this show did it in a masterful way. Riz Ahmed (who is so transformative and brilliant here) plays Naz, who literally goes from having a fun and electric chance encounter with a woman he just met, to literally being put in hell and going through what you can lightly say is the worst night of anyone’s life. He’s in the wrong place at the wrong time, and literally does and acts in all the worst ways possible. The direction and execution of that first episode leads us into an 8 episode arc of the darkness that comes with the justice system. Its rough, unfair, grimy, gritty, and just downright exhausting. We see Naz go from being an innocent and bright eyed young man to becoming a drug addicted, hardened individual, who now is a shadow of himself: mentally and physically. John Turturro is excellent here too, as he plays a character that doesn’t exactly change drastically as Naz, but is changed because of this trial. In fact, every character in this show is excellently played and written. There’s no real filler here, and what you think starts off as a murder mystery show ends up delving into a case study of a man, his coming of age, and how the judicial and legal system sadly fails people who are innocent. Some might see this and feel a pit in their stomach with the ending. Sure, none of the people end with a perfectly nice and happy ending. But, there are positives to come out of the situation. The real killer might finally get their comeuppance, Turturro finally accepts his condition, and decides that living with the cat (god I love that cat) might be better even with his allergies, Naz’s life might be damaged and altered due to Rikers, but atleast he gets a fair shot now to move forward and use his knowledge in the real world, Chandra might be disgraced from her profession but she can get a second chance with the result of the case, Box gets a chance at redemption with his focus now on Ray being the main suspect, and Naz’s parents have their son back. There’s so much to talk about here, but what I mainly took from all this was simple: life might give us bad and horrible circumstances, but its how we face those circumstances that will define us. Naz survived the belly of the beast, Stone overcame his self proclaimed flaws and helped bring his client to freedom, and though justice might have failed Naz initially, hopefully, it will serve him right and bring his name into the clear with Ray’s eventual conviction. What an incredible watch. Everything was perfect, and I’m glad they never touched on it or never had the notion of a continuation.
