Lonesome Dove rides rings around the overstuffed soap operas that usually pass for "epics" along Broadcast Row. Larry McMurtry's fat novel has been brought to TV with sweep, intelligence, and sheer storytelling drive. Go to Full Review

Mainly, there is Robert Duvall, who makes a simple, sentimental creation seem complex, heroic, always human and altogether enjoyable. Go to Full Review

Those who cherish the 1985 book should be pleased and gratified at the adaptation's fidelity to it, and those who haven't read the novel will likely be moved and fascinated anyway. It is an uncommonly rich and resonant production. Go to Full Review

Spectacularly cast and photographed, "Dove" should ride to the rescue of both the miniseries and Western forms. Go to Full Review

A
That it descended all the way down from a Terrence Malick movie to TV miniseries disturbed me -- until I saw it, that is. Robert Duvall and Tommy Lee Jones instantly made me stop hearing the voices of Joel McCrea and Randolph Scott in my head. Go to Full Review Read all reviews

Gus's character is probably the closest I can think of of what a man should be. Honest, caring, brave, compassionate and fair. His loyalty to his word and ethics is inspirational. These characters lived life. It never fails to make me cry and smile. It's a terrific ride.My favorite parts are IV and then I. Duvall and Jones give their absolute best, and the moments with them, whether together or individually, are captivating.Lane, Glover, and the rest of the cast also do very well. The music shouldn't be overlooked. The recurring main theme is memorable and stirs the emotions.Something often done poorly in westerns is Hollywood actors trying to sound country. I don't hear any of that in Lonesome Dove. Particularly, Duvall and Jones come across just like the farmers and cowboys I've been around my whole life here in Texas.Thankfully, this production predates the overwhelming injection of liberal ideology into every single media, so there's a balanced, normal presentation of the Indians, a proper view of how crime should be handled, and so forth. You will not regret watching this. It may be the best western ever made. See more Ed M07/07/2022Awesome! One of the best westerns ever made. See more Read all reviews
