In early 20th-century Britain, the growing suffragette movement forever changes the life of working wife and mother Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan). Galvanized by political activist Emmeline Pankhurst (Meryl Streep), Watts joins a diverse group of women who fight for equality and the right to vote. Faced with increasing police action, Maud and her dedicated suffragettes must play a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse, risking their jobs, homes, family and lives for a just cause.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Suffragette dramatizes an important -- and still painfully relevant -- fact-based story with more than enough craft and sincerity to overcome its flaws.

A rousing, demonstrative tale, and Mulligan not only shows the right sort of ardour, but also adds a bit of subtlety. Go to Full Review

It's not a new Hollywood approach, but it doesn't make it right. It just perpetuates the idea that white women represent all women. Period. Go to Full Review

With Suffragette, screenwriter Abi Morgan managed to pen a movie about Britain’s working-class women that’s a far sight better than the dud she scripted about Britain’s upper-class harridan. Go to Full Review

“Suffragette” dances in numerous shades of gray both in the actions of the women shown in the film and in the film’s opinion about them. Go to Full Review

When an issue such as women's right to vote caused such fervor, it's a shame to see a film so devoid of passion about the subject that it fails to provoke, inspire, or challenge its viewers. Go to Full Review Read all reviews
Michael TApr 10It’s hard to watch I didn’t like it See more Kaci BApr 9I recommend watching this movie if you would like to learn more about history of woman or for intertainment. It can be good for you to show teens/young adults. See more Enora L09/25/2023I had a wonderful time watching this movie, I'd definitely recommend it! The cast held the movie with great acting performances. Carey Mulligan is perfect for her role: a working class young mother who discovers that she can fight for her rights in society. Just like in Titanic, the characters are both fictional and historical (Emmeline Pankhurst or Emily Davison). The shots' colors might seem dull but it represented quite well the vibe of the early 1910's. The way the scenes are shot completely transports us into the events. The point of view is even more interesting and accurate because the movie was directed, produced and written by women, and the cast is mainly composed of women. See more Jean M09/25/2023"Suffragette" by Sarah Gavron was a very good movie. The cast is a great ensemble, the sets and the plot are accurate. The pictures are a bit too dark for me but the entire movie is good.About the characters, the mix of historical and fictional characters, like Emmeline Pankhurst (played by Meryl Streep) or Emily Davison (Natalie Press), give a sort of rythm to the movie just as the plot which is in the 1912 London. We are following the story of Maud Watts (Carey Mulligan), a 24 years old laundry worker get caught in a Suffragette demonstration where she recognized a co-worker, Violet Miller (Anne-Mary Duff). One thing led to another, Maud Watts joined the fight with Violet, Emily Davison, Edith Ellyn (Helena Bonham Carter) and other strong women figures.I recommand it because it's a very good historical and feminist movie, in addition, I think it's accessible to everybody, with a certain age because of the violent scenes. See more Karine L09/25/2023Awesome movie with a moving story. See more James R07/17/2023Quite possibly my favourite movie of all time! Tells the true story of perhaps the most extraordinary and important movement of our time. The cast were something else; I mean Carey Mulligan just shines here like never before, and that's saying something! The supporting cast are incredible. Made by women, about women, for women. But I say every man should watch this to understand more of what women went through, and what they still go through today. This film is never once preachy or entitled, it is so grounded and raw, true, not overly brutal but has the perfect tone of drama and hope. I've watched it countless times now, and it moves me every time. Some of the two-hander scenes, like the one between Mulligan and Gleeson, are perfect in their simplicity and cinematic brilliance. Beautiful, tragic, moving, hopeful, powerful. See more Read all reviews
