Which makes it even more egregious how terrible this is. The editing is just flat out terrible. It feels like just episodic events that have no real flow, than there are out of order events to where Gotti is young vs old, than later on it becomes more about his son than him. It just becomes convuluted to follow. Than it feels like it shows you events from his life so you do get a general idea what kind of person Gotti is, but the problem is it never takes those events and forms a cohesive narrative or message arond any of it. It's mind bockling how bad this botches the editing. The music and cinematography isn't good either. The Pitbull numbers, boring generic tracks, the modern numbers don't really fit the time period or make anything interesting . It makes already boring scenes even worse and at best it's forgettable. The cinematography at best is basic uninspired cheap looking stuff and other times it's lifeless, dull, and borderline so dark you can barely see. It also isn't clear how events lead to others at times also. This defintely expects you to know all about not just Gotti but the inner workings of the mob life too. This never explains anything about the mob life like Goodfellas does so anyone could follow it. The acting is just ok and probably the best thing. Travolta should be a pretty good choice but he's just....alright. He's trying but everyone else just isn't given much, doesn't have much chemistry, and besides the generic troubled youth and dysfunctional spouse relationship I struggle to really bring up more than one thing that sets John apart from other mob characters. It does such a poor job telling a story, building a character, immersing you into the lavish crime underworld, that it's kind of fasinating. This 100% deserves another shot with a better director, more production value, and a better narrative. Skip this until that day happens.Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars02/18/25 Full Review Leslie P It’s obvious that Kevin Connolly is ripping off Martin Scorsese’s The Wolf of Wall Street but just doing an awful job of it. From the breaking the 4th wall to the music to the footage of the actual people. But in the end, it was not executed well and really wasn’t necessary for this film. He did a lot of telling and not showing which is a filmmaking 101 no no. I kept wanting to understand who Gotti was, what his life was really like but it did not go in depth like that. It was just a retelling of his life events, almost like a documentary. Like for instance, Gotti’s wife is barely in the movie, the same with Gotti’s siblings. It would have been good to get a better understanding of how Gotti’s life affected those around him. Barely any character development or depth to the story and that was the problem. Kevin focused too much on the style of the film rather than the film itself. Which is exactly the Entourage plot when they make Medellin. Oh and Kevin cast the director of Medellin, Billy Walsh, in this movie! Haha life imitating art! The editing seemed disjointed and a lot of time the side characters were not integrated enough story wise to understand who they were or their part in the story. I kept thinking who is that guy? Why are they killing him? But then his death wouldn’t even matter much to the plot. Also some of the casting seemed off. Some of the cast just weren’t believable. I think Travolta did a good job but perhaps he could have been great with some juicer, gritty material. The script really wasn’t a story as much as a recounting of his life. It’s a shame because Gotti’s story has all the elements to be a great gangster movie.Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars02/16/25 Full Review steve d People are way too hard on this movie. It doesn't bring anything new to the mafia genre but it's enjoyable. I liked Travolta's portrayal although once in a while you could hear his normal voice show through. But overall pretty good. 3.25 stars.Rated 3/5 Stars • Rated 3 out of 5 stars02/09/25 Full Review SICKS6SIX S someone please tell these old duds to stop, just stop, go away and enjoy old age playing golf or driving sports cars along Ventura drive, Hollywood is now run by and for LGTBQ people and OAPs, we need the James Deens and Brandos of life to make films and not these fools, thank god for youtube, kids with smartphones are making better more entertaining viewing than this lot of duffers.Rated 0.5/5 Stars • Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars01/26/25 Full Review Joe V I enjoyed it. How hateful do you have to be to denigrate this film so much? It may not be on the same level as The Godfather. But it is worth seeing and for fans of the genre it offers good and solid entertainment.John Travolta is convincing in his role as John Gotti.Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars11/24/24 Full Review Read all reviews
