R&E were the people back then. They had a whole show! This movie was a great opening to get out of basic life. Us kids of the 90s and 00s had no idea what we we were doing and where to go.This movie, for me, gave me options. It let me dream of where I may end up, or the person that I may become. The best part of the movie is getting through it. Leo liked these hard roles. And this one is hard. No one ever wants to deal with bad bs .I say, watch if it interests you.The show is about people who find that paradise isn't real. Unless you want to turn away from humanity. On more than one level.Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars03/07/25 Full Review Diane S Have continued to love this movie and tell people about it when discussing the garret beaches of the world. While the storyline has a bit of the troubled-adventure-seeking-young- lad-doing-something-stupid and then falling into a bigger pit than he expected -a cliche for sure, it's well- done by Dicaprio and the director. Yes, the scenery is amazing and it's real. But most of you will never get to Thailand and see it. And isn't Thailand the prime destination for men wanting to behave badly while being around gorgeous landscape, even when it's not on the beaches? The preview makes it look like the story is about the girl. It's not. That's just typical for this kind of movie. The trouble is what is on the others of the islands from the hippie enclave that takes them in and which warns them not to venture to the other side. No mythical monsters there. Just brutal reality that going into the wild opens you up to people who don't play by the rules. A better preview would turn this into a cult classic as more open minded people would see it. It's truly unique while using some cinematic clichés as the starting point.Rated 5/5 Stars • Rated 5 out of 5 stars01/21/25 Full Review Dallas H Porcelain by Moby is my favorite part of the movie.Rated 2/5 Stars • Rated 2 out of 5 stars01/06/25 Full Review Maani H Just about watchable. Started ok but then then desended into a muddled plot with Richard's intangible mental collapse.Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars01/01/25 Full Review Blu B If someone is nostalgic for anything from the time when Leo ruled the world or that late 90's-early 00's look than I get why they could watch this and have a like for it. Or if someone has never seen any of the abstract stuff from New Hollywood like 3 Women, Apocalypse Now, The Swimmer type of stuff. But besides that I struggle to find a reason why this is even close to good. Editing, Cinematography, and pacing aren't good here and everything else at best is ok. This is very pretentious at times, over the top, and too assuring of how good it is. First off the big plot hole of how was Richard left a map which shows this was happening before and they never had a problem of to many people before? That makes no sense. The video game scene is just bizarre. The island location is cool though and memorable and the only thing that I would call good here. Leo reminds me of Christian Bale in this in that he's pouring his heart and soul into every scene but it doesn't matter much when the character isn't likeable or a young pretentious idealisitic college kid. It's also really unfocused at times and has too many characters. The 2 people he arrives on the island with feel forgotten about for long stretches, the love triangle, the overseeers of the island, the jumbled messaging, the complete tone change in the second half to Apocalypse Now type stuff, its got so many things going on and ideas that it isn't able to resolve them all. The direction can be very distracting at times too and feel obnoxious. Some characters and acting is just bizarre and none of them including Richard is too particulary likeable. The other islanders all just blend in as well and it feels like stuff just happens when they arrive. It's messaging is like a character study into isolation, hypocrisy, utopia ideals, and being young and dumb and it just never really does anythign cohesive with it and it just feels like it ends as well in a very anticlimatic way. It's like watching someone who is in over their head but has such a big head because they think they have all the answers and are so damn good. Skip This and watch Titanic or a 70's flick that does this stuff right.Rated 2.5/5 Stars • Rated 2.5 out of 5 stars12/25/24 Full Review Read all reviews
