Abstract

In situ Operations, Administration, and Maintenance (IOAM) collectsoperational and telemetry information in the packet while the packettraverses a path between two points in the network. This documentdiscusses the data fields and associated data types for IOAM.IOAM-Data-Fields can be encapsulated into a variety of protocols, such as Network Service Header (NSH), Segment Routing, GenericNetwork Virtualization Encapsulation (Geneve), or IPv6. IOAM can beused to complement OAM mechanisms based on, e.g., ICMP or other typesof probe packets.
