Abstract

This document describes an extension to IPv6 Stateless AddressAutoconfiguration that causes hosts to generate temporary addresseswith randomized interface identifiers for each prefix advertised withautoconfiguration enabled. Changing addresses over time limits thewindow of time during which eavesdroppers and other informationcollectors may trivially perform address-based network-activitycorrelation when the same address is employed for multipletransactions by the same host. Additionally, it reduces the window ofexposure of a host as being accessible via an address that becomesrevealed as a result of active communication. This document obsoletesRFC 4941.
