There is a noticeable trend towards network behaviors and semanticsthat are specific to a particular set of requirements applied withina limited region of the Internet. Policies, default parameters, theoptions supported, the style of network management, and securityrequirements may vary between such limited regions. This documentreviews examples of such limited domains (also known as controlledenvironments), notes emerging solutions, and includes a relatedtaxonomy. It then briefly discusses the standardization of protocolsfor limited domains. Finally, it shows the need for a precisedefinition of "limited domain membership" and for mechanisms to allownodes to join a domain securely and to find other members, includingboundary nodes.
