Opportunistic Secure Real-time Transport Protocol (OSRTP) is animplementation of the Opportunistic Security mechanism, as defined inRFC 7435, applied to the Real-time Transport Protocol (RTP). OSRTPallows encrypted media to be used in environments where support forencryption is not known in advance and is not required. OSRTP doesnot require Session Description Protocol (SDP) extensions or featuresand is fully backwards compatible with existing implementations usingencrypted and authenticated media and implementations that do notencrypt or authenticate media packets. OSRTP is not specific to anykey management technique for Secure RTP (SRTP). OSRTP is atransitional approach useful for migrating existing deployments ofreal-time communications to a fully encrypted and authenticatedstate.
