Software-Defined Networking (SDN) advocates for the separation of thecontrol plane from the data plane in the network nodes and itslogical centralization on one or a set of control entities. Most ofthe network and/or service intelligence is moved to these controlentities. Typically, such an entity is seen as a compendium ofinteracting control functions in a vertical, tightly integratedfashion. The relocation of the control functions from a number ofdistributed network nodes to a logical central entity conceptuallyplaces together a number of control capabilities with differentpurposes. As a consequence, the existing solutions do not provide aclear separation between transport control and services that relyupon transport capabilities.
This document describes an approach called Cooperating LayeredArchitecture for Software-Defined Networking (CLAS), wherein thecontrol functions associated with transport are differentiated fromthose related to services in such a way that they can be provided andmaintained independently and can follow their own evolution path.
