Abstract

This document describes and discusses the textual encodings of thePublic-Key Infrastructure X.509 (PKIX), Public-Key CryptographyStandards (PKCS), and Cryptographic Message Syntax (CMS). Thetextual encodings are well-known, are implemented by severalapplications and libraries, and are widely deployed. This documentarticulates the de facto rules by which existing implementationsoperate and defines them so that future implementations caninteroperate.
