Abstract
This document defines the concept "Opportunistic Security" in thecontext of communications protocols. Protocol designs based onOpportunistic Security use encryption even when authentication is notavailable, and use authentication when possible, thereby removingbarriers to the widespread use of encryption on the Internet.
