Abstract

Software-Defined Networking (SDN) has been one of the major buzzwords of the networking industry for the past couple of years. Andyet, no clear definition of what SDN actually covers has been broadlyadmitted so far. This document aims to clarify the SDN landscape byproviding a perspective on requirements, issues, and otherconsiderations about SDN, as seen from within a service providerenvironment.

It is not meant to endlessly discuss what SDN truly means but ratherto suggest a functional taxonomy of the techniques that can be usedunder an SDN umbrella and to elaborate on the various pending issuesthe combined activation of such techniques inevitably raises. Assuch, a definition of SDN is only mentioned for the sake ofclarification.

For the definition ofStatus,seeRFC 2026.

For the definition ofStream, seeRFC 8729.
