Abstract

The objective of the Pre-Congestion Notification (PCN) architectureis to protect the quality of service (QoS) of inelastic flows withina Diffserv domain. It achieves this by marking packets belonging toPCN-flows when the rate of traffic exceeds certain configuredthresholds on links in the domain. These marks can then be evaluatedto determine how close the domain is to being congested. Thisdocument specifies how such marks are encoded into the IP header byredefining the Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) codepointswithin such domains. The baseline encoding described here providesonly two PCN encoding states: Not-marked and PCN-marked. Futureextensions to this encoding may be needed in order to provide morethan one level of marking severity. [STANDARDS-TRACK]
