Abstract

This document describes a mechanism to achieve device isolationthrough the application of special Layer 2 forwarding constraints.Such a mechanism allows end devices to share the same IP subnet whilebeing Layer 2 isolated, which in turn allows network designers toemploy larger subnets and so reduce the address management overhead.

Some of the numerous deployment scenarios of the aforementionedmechanism (which range from data center designs toEthernet-to-the-home-basement networks) are mentioned in the following textto exemplify the mechanism's possible usages; however, this documentis not intended to cover all such deployment scenarios nor delve into theirdetails. This document is not an Internet Standards Track specification; it is published for informational purposes.
