The TCP user timeout controls how long transmitted data may remainunacknowledged before a connection is forcefully closed. It is alocal, per-connection parameter. This document specifies a new TCPoption -- the TCP User Timeout Option -- that allows one end of a TCPconnection to advertise its current user timeout value. Thisinformation provides advice to the other end of the TCP connection toadapt its user timeout accordingly. Increasing the user timeouts onboth ends of a TCP connection allows it to survive extended periodswithout end-to-end connectivity. Decreasing the user timeouts allowsbusy servers to explicitly notify their clients that they willmaintain the connection state only for a short time withoutconnectivity. [STANDARDS-TRACK]
