Abstract

There have been a number of proposals for alternate semantics forthe Explicit Congestion Notification (ECN) field in the IP headerRFC 3168. This document discusses some of the issues in definingalternate semantics for the ECN field, and specifies requirements fora safe coexistence in an Internet that could include routers that donot understand the defined alternate semantics. This document evolvedas a result of discussions with the authors of one recent proposal forsuch alternate semantics. This document specifies an Internet Best Current Practices for theInternet Community, and requests discussion and suggestions forimprovements.
