The Fantastic Four Meet The Beatles: A List of Marvel Musical Sit-Ins

Dean Budnick on March 17, 2018

The Jan_Feb issue of Relix contains a piece titled “Captain America Digs Deadheads: The Grateful Dead Meet Marvel” (you can read it here). While working on the article as well as the follow-up that appears in the March issue, my research extended beyond the Grateful Dead’s connection with Marvel. Since plenty of folks have Marvel on their minds this weekend with the release of the latest Avengers Infinity War trailer, here’s a look at some of the notable musical guest appearances in Marvel comics over the years (I have excluded any Dazzler guest stints–along with her own series–as she is an official musical force in her own right). Thanks to Kurtis Findlay of the Epic Marvel Podcast and the good folks on theMarvel Masterworks message board for their assistance.

Strange Tales #130 (MARCH 1965): Johnny Storm (The Human Torch) and Ben Grimm (The Thing) take dates to a Beatles concert in Manhattan, but the heroes miss the show when they chase criminals who steal the box-office receipts.

Nick Fury, Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., #15 (NOVEMBER 1969): Nick Fury attends a Country Joe and the Fish concert in Central Park where he is shot by a villain hoping to collect a $1 million bounty.

Avengers #93 (NOVEMBER 1971): Hank Pym enters The Vision and attempts to repair him with the aid of his trusty ants named Crosby, Stills and Nash.

Howard the Duck #13 (JUNE 1977): Howard’s young friend Winda Wester uses her mind to materialize KISS.

The Defenders #59-60 (MAY-JUNE 1978): The superhero team battles Vera Gemini and Agents of Fortune, a reference to the Blue Öyster Cult’s 1976 album Agents of Fortune (and, yes, the band members appear as demon lords).

Marvel Premiere #50 (OCTOBER 1979): This issue offers an interpretation of Alice Cooper’s 1978 record From the Inside.

Incredible Hulk #271 (MAY 1982): Rocket Raccoon and Hulk embark on an adventure that is based on the Beatles song “Rocky Raccoon.”

Avengers #239(JANUARY 1984): The Beast, The Black Panther, Black Widow, Hawkeye, Mockingbird and Wonder Man appear on Late Night With David Letterman. Paul Shaffer and the World’s Most Dangerous Band are in on the action as well.

What If? #41 (SEPTEMBER 1992): This issue provides the answer to something we’ve all wondered: “What if the Fantastic Four were led by Keith Richards instead of Reed Richards?”

Eminem/The Punisher #1 (MAY 2009): ‘Nuff Said.

X-Men ‘92 #6 (AUGUST 2016): The X-Men are working security at Westchester’s LILAPALOOZA, which features music from The Flaming Lips and the Toadies.

Intrigued by any of these? Marvel offersdigital versions of their archival comics, so you can check them out.
