Singer-songwriter Eric Carmen turns 74

Born in Cleveland, Ohio on August 11, 1949, Eric Carmen came to prominence during the 1970’s after starting his solo career. The singer-songwriter had been professionally active in music since 1967 when he was a member of Cleveland’s band the Choir, which scored a minor national hit in 1967 with the single “It’s Cold Outside”. He then joined The Raspberries which obtain more visibility and success, reaching No.5 in 1972 at the Hot 100 with “Go All the Way”, but it was in 1976, when Carmen released what is still considered to be his biggest hit and signature song, “All by Myself”, that he truly became a household name. “All by Myself”, based on Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2, peaked to No.2 at the Hot 100 in 1976, and its popularity spread worldwide, becoming one of the 1970’s major hits, still covered by many artists. Carmen also had other hits such as “Never Gonna Fall in Love Again” and “She Did It”, but it was only in 1987 that he returned to the Top 10 with “Hungry Eyes”, from the movie “Dirty Dancing” soundtrack. The song hit number 2 on the Adult Contemporary Chart. Despite continuing to write and licensing music, Eric Carmen hasn’t toured since 2009. Today he turns 74.
