    Als Held lebt er in Escissia und schließt zu Beginn seiner Reise mit vier besonderen Personen Freundschaft, denen er regelmäßig auf seinem Abenteuer begegnen wird, und die ihm schon bald ans Herz wachsen werden. Jedes Mitglied der Gruppe erhält ein Pokémon und einen Pokédex. Zusammen brechen sie auf eine Reise quer durch die Kalos-Region auf.[1] Dort besiegt er mit den anderen im Verlauf des SpielsTeam Flare und hindert sie an ihren Plänen, die Weltbevölkerung zu dezimieren.

    Die Erscheinung des Protagonisten im Spiel kann vom Spieler individuell bestimmt werden, weshalb Kalem neben Serena der erste Protagonist ist, der verschiedene Haar-, Haut- und Irisfarben besitzen kann; somit ist er auch der erste Protagonist, der nicht nur blonde Haare, sondern auch eine dunkle Hautfarbe besitzen kann. Um ihn zu verändern, können Kleidungsstücke in einerBoutique gekauft und derStyle-Salon besucht werden.

    Wählt man an seiner StelleSerena am Anfang als Spielcharakter aus, tritt er als Nicht-Spieler-Charakter und Mitglied der Gruppe, mit der sie zusammen auf die große Reise geht, auf. Er ist das Nachbarskind aus Escissia.
