AttacksPikmin 2:  Blow wind that withers Pikmin flowers
Pikmin 4:  Blow gas that withers Pikmin flowers

TheWithering Blowhog (アオケダタラ?, lit.: "Aoke Bellows") is anenemy inPikmin 2 andPikmin 4. Withering Blowhogs are a smaller variation of thePuffy Blowhog. They areballoon-shaped creatures that have orange-red skin with yellow spots that seem to form a flame design and a white underside. They also seem to have four whisker-like appendages under their snouts that are white in color. WhenPikmin are nearby, they unleash gusts of air (or orange gas inPikmin 4), which will cause the Pikmin's flowers to instantlywilt. InPikmin 4, they can also wiltsprouts, and can rapidly escape after shaking off Pikmin by blowing a burst of gas, flying off, and reappearing a short distance away.

In2-Player Battle, the Withering Blowhog is one of the selections on the roulette. When chosen, these creatures appear near the opponent'sOnion and act the same as they do in the main story mode.

Behavior[edit]

Like theirPuffy Blowhog cousins, Withering Blowhogs attack by using nasal blasts to shove Pikmin around. However, their nasal blast will alsowilt any Pikmin hit by it, dramatically slowing them down; this makes them rather annoying enemies that, in most cases, should be prioritized to minimize potential frustration, especially ifnectar is not readily available to re-flower the Pikmin.Purple Pikmin are heavy enough that they won't be shoved around by the air, although they'll still lose their flowers. If the Blowhog is able to wilt any Pikmin, it will briefly stop and chuckle.

InPikmin 2, if a Withering Blowhog happens to spawn behind abramble gate that needs to be broken or a thin wall in caverns, be aware that it can – and will – attack the Pikmin through it, wilting all of them. In the event one is guarding a gate, this will complicate matters significantly, as, apart from wilting them, each blast will knock them away from the gate, stalling progress. Either be prepared to locate nectar to re-flower the Pikmin after, or, alternatively, reset the game to regenerate the sublevel for a better layout.

InPikmin 4, they will additionally target Pikmin sprouts that have flowers or buds, attacking and wilting them as well, most noticeably in sublevels with buriedwild Pikmin. They also behave slightly differently: they will largely ignore the player if their entire Pikminsquad consists of nothing but leaf Pikmin, or if the player has no Pikmin with them, whereas inPikmin 2, they will attempt to attack anyways. Additionally, if the player's squad is currently affected byUltra-Spicy Spray, the Blowhog will actively retreat from them, waiting until it wears off to attack. If attacked for an excessively long period of time, they will retreat by blasting directly below them, shooting into the sky while wilting everything nearby, and relocating somewhere nearby after a few moments.

When defeated, they will panic and empty their air bladder to escape, although the air in this animation is cosmetic and cannot wilt Pikmin. InPikmin 2, they will despawn entirely after this, dropping anything they might have been holding, while inPikmin 4, their flattened corpse will land after a short delay, allowing the Pikmin to carry it.

Strategy[edit]

With Pikmin[edit]

The President successfully hitting a Withering Blowhog.

Throw Pikmin (preferablyPurple Pikmin) at it, taking care to avoid the nasal blast, as the loss of flower Pikmin can be frustrating. Purple Pikmin cannot be knocked around by its air blasts, making them ideal candidates for fighting one, although they will still be wilted if hit.

If it does successfully wilt any Pikmin, it will stop and giggle. Use this opportunity to counterattack.

InPikmin 4, if the player's squad is currently under the effect ofUltra-Spicy Spray, the Withering Blowhog will attempt to keep its distance from them for the duration, actively retreating if approached. Attacking it during this period will make for an extremely swift battle with no chance of retaliation.

Alternate methods[edit]

Despite appearances, aleadercan hurt a Withering Blowhog exclusively inPikmin 2; the third hit from theRocket Fist combo can hit if performed directly underneath it, although it would take a very long time to kill it exclusively with punches.

InPikmin 4, ifOatchi'sBig Chomp skill has been learned, enabling him to bite in midair, he becomes an ideal candidate for attacking one, as the Withering Blowhog obviously cannot wilt him, although note that it may shove him around with air blasts unless theBrace Boots have been purchased.

Notes

Olimar's notes

The withering blowhog is a close relative of the puffy blowhog, but its breath is significantly weaker. However, its breath does contain a petal-withering plant hormone that causes flowers to instantly lose their petals. Although its breath has not been studied in detail, analysis of the chemical compounds involved hold great promise for the biotechnology sector.

Louie's notes

Hang this creature on a rack and sun-dry on a hot afternoon. When suitably crisp, grind the sun-dried beast into powder. Makes a great

substitute for cayenne or curry powder!

Dalmo's notes[edit]

You can have a bit of fun with this one by giving it a good poke and watching it wobble and sway through the air like a balloon. Poke it too much, though, and it may spew gas and fly off. It's a mischievous little darling, and the way it scatters flowers and cackles is quite charming!

Pikmin 2 Nintendo Player's Guide[edit]

The Withering Blowhog can exhale with so much force that it blows the bloom off a Pikmin and turns it into a leaf-bearing sprout. After you battle one of the beasts, chances are your troops will be in need of nectar.

Naming[edit]

See more:Blowhog family#Naming.
  • Common name: Withering Blowhog. Thisblowhog's main ability is to wither away Pikmin's flowers and buds, hence the name.
  • Japanese nickname:アオケダタラ?. The name includes the wordたたら? (lit.: "Tatara"), which refers to a type of furnace known for its large bellows. This refers both to the creature's strong breath and flame pattern. The first half of the name,アオケ?, doesn't have any applicable meanings and was likely made for the sound of the word rather than meaning.
  • Japanese name:ミカゼアオケダタラ?, lit.: "Three Winds Aoke Bellows".
  • Scientific name:Sus decrepitia. It uses the main genus name on the blowhog family, anddecrepitia is very similar to the Latin worddecrepita, meaning "feeble". This is because of its ability to weaken Pikmin.
  • Internal names: Internally, it is known ashanachirashi, wherehana isはな? (lit.: "flower"), andchirashi isらし?, which means "to scatter" or "to disperse". This name could have been decided due to the fact that when a Pikmin's flower is blown off, its petals scatter everywhere.
  • Prerelease: None.

Trivia[edit]

  • In the Japanese version and in an early version of the English translation, the plant withering hormone is said to be an ethylene-like compound.[1]
  • Interestingly, when the game is paused or acutscene is active, the light bands of color that flash across the Blowhog's skin will still move, even if the Blowhog itself is motionless.
  • The Withering Blowhog resembles theiwagen, an unused object inPikmin.
