The Final Trial (最後の試練?, lit.: "Final Ordeal") is the fifth and finalarea inPikmin. It is set in a woodland area filled with flowers and has a complex layout that encourages the use of all three Pikmin types. As its name suggests, it serves as a final test of the player's knowledge on thePikmin. As the final area, it is unlocked by collecting 29ship parts, which total to all of the parts located in the game's other areas. At the end of the area, the game's finalboss, theEmperor Bulblax, resides, holding theSecret Safe, the final ship part. The Final Trial was reused alongside The Impact Site inPikmin 2 to make up theWistful Wild.

In the south of the area lies the landing site, along with one each of three different varieties ofCandypop Bud. Since there are no Pikmin production sources in the area outside of the 5-pellets the Emperor Bulblax drops, the Candypop Buds are the only real way to increase the population of a Pikmin type, albeit at the expense of another type. To the north, the area "splits" into three paths. The left path focuses onRed Pikmin, due to thefire geysers. The center path contains water which onlyBlue Pikmin can traverse through. And the path on the right containsbomb-rocks, which onlyYellow Pikmin can hold. The central part of the area contains a small pool of water. To the west of it, there is a narrow path with fire geysers. To the east are a group of small islands with 8bomb-rocks, although sometimes 9 appear instead. In the middle of the pool are 2 bridges and a normal stonegate. To the north is acardboard box blocking off the area past the pair of bridges.

The arena where the Emperor Bulblax is fought and a wall that leads to three pipes with 15 bomb-rocks each lies at the northernmost part of the area. On the far west of the pool is a ledge with no hazards, meaning Olimar can throw additional Pikmin onto the ledge, then run down to collect them when he reaches the end of the main path.

In Challenge Mode, aYellow Wollyhop is found in the pool and aBeady Long Legs appears once he enters the arena. ABurrowing Snagret is found in the cliffs around it. Smaller enemies are found around Olimar's base, such as aDwarf Bulborb,Dwarf Bulbears, andSheargrubs. Unlike in the other levels, 100 Pikmin are already present on the map, buried in various locations.

Guide[edit]

The following article or section containsguides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

The Final Trial requires the use of all 3 Pikmin types to complete. Start by getting a large squad ofBlue Pikmin. Walk into the water in front of the landing site and start building thebridges going in either direction from the central island. The bridge further from the landing site requires throwing Pikmin towards the bridge from the water, while the bridge closer to the landing site starts at a part of the island that's possible to walk up to from the water.

Return to the base and get a small squad ofYellow Pikmin. On the right side of the area in front of the landing site, there is an island. Throw all your Yellow Pikmin onto this island, then walk through the water to call the Pikmin. Then throw them onto the plateau in front of this island, and use a geyser to go up to this plateau. In front of this plateau, there is a pipe containingbomb-rocks. Pick up the bomb-rocks with your Yellow Pikmin and throw the Pikmin carrying the bomb-rocks to the central island where the bridges start. Destroy thereinforced wall with the bomb-rocks, and then send the Yellow Pikmin to help build the bridges if they're not already built.

Return to the base and get a squad of at least 10Red Pikmin. On the left side of the area in front of the landing site, there is an elevated metal path withfire geysers. Throw your Red Pikmin onto this path, and then walk into the water. Whistle the Pikmin and swarm them forwards to move them along the path. Walk to the end of the lake and swarm the Pikmin to the right so that they start pushing acardboard box out of the way of the end of the bridge.

Once the bridges are built, the reinforced wall is destroyed, and the cardboard box is pushed, you're ready to fight the final boss, theEmperor Bulblax. Choose a squad of Pikmin for fighting the boss, walk across the bridges towards the boss arena, and destroy the bramble gate at the entrance to the arena. Defeat the boss, and carry theSecret Safe it drops to the S.S. Dolphin to complete the game.

The Final Trial is unique amongChallenge Mode stages in that the player starts with 100 Pikmin, enough to reach thePikmin limit. However, most of these Pikmin are scattered around the area in small groups of sprouts, meaning to expand theirsquad size, the player doesn't have to collect the objects near the landing site, they have to explore the area for the other sprouts, while collecting things at the same time to increase the total number of Pikmin. The boss arena contains aBeady Long Legs, and there is also aBurrowing Snagret nearby. The maximum number of Pikmin obtainable is 299 and the time limit is 13 minutes and 30 seconds, the same as a normalday.

Trivia[edit]

  • The terrain and surroundings of this area, along with the terrain and surroundings ofThe Impact Site, make up the layout for theWistful Wild inPikmin 2, with the exception of the places where the two map layouts meet. In addition, the object around the Emperor Bulblax's arena is confirmed to be a sideways tire rim, as evident by the filename of its texture inPikmin 2:last_wheel_s3tc.
  • Although it is intended that all 3 types are used to complete this area, it can be completed with justYellow Pikmin. This can be done by making the Pikmin "swim" to thebridges, and bythrowing them over the slanted part of the metal wall between the second bridge and thebox, then making the Pikmin run over to said box.
  • Strangely, a Bulborb appears here in theend of day cutscene, as well as in the perfectending, despite the only visible Grub-dog in the area being theEmperor Bulblax.
  • OnNew Play Control! Pikmin, it is possible to throw Pikmin directly to the island with the bridges by leaning against the western wall directly to the south of the ledge of the fire geyser path, and throwing Pikmin east so they land on top of the island's metal wall.[1]
  • Upon unlocking The Final Trial, shooting stars will appear at the top of the area selection screen.
