TheSpotty Bulbear (クマチャッピー?, lit.: "Bear Chappy") is a powerfulenemy that appears in every major game in thePikmin series.
While they resembleBulborbs at a glance, Spotty Bulbears lack their pointed snouts and generally have a rounder face, with large, chapped lips. They have black, red-dotted backs, and their faces are creamy yellow or orange. The Bulbears' larger mouths allow them to gobblePikmin up in greater number and speed than most other Bulborb species, making them rather formidable adversaries.
While they spend most of their time sleeping until disturbed inPikmin, they are constantly awake in all other games, and will freely patrol the entire area in search of prey. Spotty Bulbears are often accompanied by itsDwarf Bulbear offspring, who follow their 'parent' on their patrols in search of food.

Behavior[edit]
The following article or section is in need of assistance from someone who playsPikmin. |
InPikmin, Spotty Bulbears largely spend their time sleeping, only waking up if disturbed by the Pikmin orOlimar. They have slightly more health than their Spotty Bulborb counterparts, making confrontation riskier. The red spots on their back constantly change in size, even after the creature's death. They have a noticeableregeneration factor, healing if the player takes too much time to kill them.
InPikmin 2, Spotty Bulbears never sleep, spending all of their time patrolling in search of prey. Contrary to whatOlimar's notes suggest, they do not have a predefined 'patrol path'; they simply wander to random, nearby mapnodes while patrolling, often followed by multiple Dwarf Bulbears. They are one of the most mobile enemies in the entire game: In any sublevel or area where a Spotty Bulbear is active, extreme caution must be taken until it is neutralized, as it's random patrol path allows it to potentially attack Pikmin anywhere, including while idling at the base.
Spotty Bulbears inPikmin 2 do not truly die when defeated, instead falling unconscious. When lying unconscious, its health will steadily regenerate as it attempts torevive itself. If the body is not destroyed, such as by defeating it while it ispetrified, it will eventually wake back up, requiring a repeated "kill".
InPikmin 3, Spotty Bulbears largely behave the same. They have a notable resistance tobomb rocks, and are generally less persistent, stomping their foot in anger and disengaging a chase if they cannot reach their intended target, compared to the previous game, where they would try forever.
InPikmin 4, they can be found both above and below ground, featuring most prominently in theGiant's Hearth, where three patrol the central part of the area. They also appear in some hardernight expeditions. They mostly behave identically to theirPikmin 3 counterparts, although hitting their eyes no longer stuns them, and they now have predetermined patrol paths. While they still sleeplessly wander during the day, they now follow predictable routes through smaller areas, rather than being able to roam anywhere as inPikmin 2 andPikmin 3, making it much easier to bypass or outright ambush one.

Strategy[edit]
The following article or section containsguides. |
Pikmin[edit]
The exact same strategy for theSpotty Bulborb is effective here, but take care of the Bulbear's increased health. A large group ofRed Pikmin or threebomb-rocks will do it in.
Pikmin 2[edit]
Spotty Bulbears are always awake in this game and are constantly roaming the map, making a surprise attack nearly impossible. It is possible to trick the Bulbear into attacking and missing, allowing theleader access to its backside, but they frequently haveDwarf Bulbears following them, making this tactic risky. Another means of accessing its rear is to split theleaders, using the one without Pikmin as a distraction. IfPurple Pikmin are available, they make the battle easier as they can injure and stun the adult and children, but with other types it may be wise to use anultra-bitter spray. It is often effective to switch roles with and hunt the Bulbear itself before it can pick up any Dwarves, and then stun and attack it.
If fighting multiple at the same time, such as in theSubterranean Lair, attempt to include as many as possible in the radius of an ultra-bitter spray dose to simplify the battle and prevent heavy losses.
In situations where time is not a concern, but one wishes to keep the Pikmin out of harm's way, it is possible to punch it and it's offspring to death, although it will be a risky and somewhat lengthy process even with theRocket Fist.
Spotty Bulbears will pursue nearby leaders/Pikmin when they detect them and will pay no mind to anything in their path, such as walls or bottomless pits. As such, it is entirely possible to make it commit suicide by tricking it into walking off the sublevel and into theabyss. If the Bulbear is holding a treasure, like on the third sublevel of theDream Den, the treasure will safely appear nearby after a moment.
Pikmin 3[edit]
Spotty Bulbears have a number of new weaknesses inPikmin 3:
- They no longer revive when killed.
- When a Bulbear snatches Pikmin, it stops to fling them into the air and land them down its throat. Then, it pauses for about two seconds. If it has eaten a large amount of Pikmin recently, it may burp. This small sliver of time should be enough for a wary player to escape or attempt an attack.
- They will instantly die if they ingest a bomb rock.
- Bulbears now emit a heavy, snarly breathing noise when giving chase, which can be heard from a distance, alerting players of their presence. When in a dark area, their glowing purple eyes can also be seen from a distance.
- If a Bulbear spots the player, it will now give a glance at the group, making it much easier to tell if the Bulbear can see its prey or not.
- They can be briefly stunned if their eyes are attacked, like other large grub-dogs inPikmin 3.
In the sole encounter in the game's main story, bomb rocks are provided; to avoid a costly battle, simply use them to defeat the Bulbear quickly.
If attacking head-on, they are fought quite similarly to other grub-dogs; your best course of action is usually keeping it in a cycle of flinching by throwing Pikmin at it's eyes repeatedly to ensure it cannot attack.Rock Pikmin andRed Pikmin are the most effective for this strategy.
Pikmin 4[edit]
![]() | This article is astub. You can help Pikipedia byexpanding it. |
They are nearly identical to their appearance inPikmin 2, and can no longer be stunned by hitting them in the eyes.
Purple Pikmin deal heavy damage, while Ice Pikmin can freeze them to create an opening. You can also use Oatchi’s rush attack with all Pikmin on his back (a “tank” strategy), which can quickly overwhelm and defeat the Bulbear.
Bomb Rocks can also be used effectively, especially Ice Bombs to freeze them temporarily. Throwing Pikpik carrots can help distract them as well.
As for the Dwarf Bulbears nearby, you can eliminate them by simply throwing Pikmin while the Spotty Bulbear is distracted, clearing the area around it for a safer fight.

“A midsize subspecies within the Grub-Dog family, the Spotty Bulbear's unique feeding habits set it apart from other Grub-Dogs. It patrols a set path, searching for prey instead of passively feeding on creatures that wander into a limited territorial range.
When entering Spotty Bulbear habitat, it is wise to proceed with extreme caution until the Bulbear's patrol path can be clearly identified.”Louie's notes (Pikmin 4)[edit]

“By nature, Spotty Bulbears are slightly larger than Spotty Bulborbs, and their body color is not significantly different. However, due to rare environmental changes, it has been confirmed that individuals exhibiting body color changes occasionally appear. Since discolored individuals have been observed clustered together within relatively small areas, it is thought that the discoloration occurs due to changes in their diet. Compared to Spotty Bulborbs, they appear to have stronger vitality and significantly harder outer shells.

Naming[edit]
- See more:Grub-dog family#Naming.
- Common name: Spotty Bulbear. The name is a counterpart to the name "Spotty Bulborb", which is what theBulborb was identified as before the release ofPikmin 2. The word "Bulbear" is an alteration of the word "Bulborb" such that it ends with "bear" instead; this word reflects this creature's much more brutal nature.
- Japanese nickname:クマチャッピー?, lit.: "Bear Chappy".
- Japanese name:クマデメマダラ?, lit.: "Spotted Bear Bug-eye". It is the same as the Dwarf Bulbear's.
- Scientific name:Oculus terribilis dotticum.Terribilis is Latin for "terrible", anddotticum resembles the English word "dotted". In thePikmin Nintendo Player's Guide, the scientific name is simplyOculus terribilis, which would later be used by the Dwarf Bulbear.
- Internal names: The creature's internal name inPikmin is
swallob, which could be seen as a change on the Spotty Bulborb's name (swallow), as to mean "swallow B", or the second type of enemy with the "swallow" internal name. The internal name inPikmin 2 and inPikmin 3 is the same as its Japanese nickname:kumachappy. - Prerelease: In an early English script left inside the game's disc, the scientific name used to be justOculus terribilis, as in the Player's Guide.[1]

Trivia[edit]
- Exclusively inPikmin, their pupil color is dependent on on an invisible point, which there are two of inThe Distant Spring, above the areas nearby both theUV Lamp and closestbomb-rock pile to the landing site. Their pupils take on their natural purple color (or dark blue forDwarf Bulbears) when facing one of these points, with them appearing as a bright, glowing, pinkish red when facing away, or even a gradient between the two at certain angles.
- InThe Forest of Hope'sChallenge Mode version, this invisible point is instead always aboveCaptain Olimar, and used to cast a light around his immediate surroundings.
- In theenemy reel inPikmin, Bulborbs are often present in places that Bulbears inhabit in the final version. This suggests that Spotty Bulbears were likely intended to be much rarer duringPikmin's development, or potentially were implemented only later in development.
- The enemy reel also notes that Spotty Bulbears display "indefatigability," suggesting a degree of tirelessness or persistence. While this is inaccurate inPikmin, as they sleep just as often as Spotty Bulborbs and disengage chases just as quickly as them, this notably does apply to their depictions in the rest of the games, where they never sleep, constantly patrol areas, and, inPikmin 2, canrevive.
- The Spotty Bulbear was one of four enemies that were planned, but ultimately removed, for the roulette wheel inPikmin 2's2-Player Battle, along with theAntenna Beetle, andFiery/Hydro Dweevils.
- The Spotty Bulbear and theGatling Groink are the only enemies that canrevive inPikmin 2. Both of these enemies are also, notably, the only ones in the game that can freely roam the areas they are found in.
