Atunnel is a type ofobstacle inPikmin 3 andPikmin 4. Some walls have tunnels in them which serve as shortcuts between two parts of anarea, but when these walls are first found, they are covered in pebbles and dirt.Pikmin must beordered to open the tunnel, where they will slowly begin cleaning up the clutter. The tunnel cannot be entered until all the gravel has been removed. Tunnels may not be used to allow passage to Pikmincarrying large objects inPikmin 3, but can do so inPikmin 4.

Digging speeds[edit]

There are two phases for digging a tunnel inPikmin 3. The first phase consists in digging the entrance to the tunnel, and the second one consists in digging inside the tunnel. During the first phase, different Pikmin types will dig at different speeds, whereas in the second one, every Pikmin will dig at the same speed. The following table lists relative digging speeds, based on the most "normal" Pikmin type, the Blue Pikmin.

These digging speeds are exactly the same as each Pikmin type's relativeattack power. It's possible to see that Yellow Pikmin are not given any speed improvement, compared to when they aredigging a buried fruit.

Narrow tunnel[edit]

Narrow tunnels are a variant of tunnels inPikmin 4 that are smaller in diameter than regular tunnels. Due to their size,Oatchi is unable to go through them, but therookie Rescue Officer and Pikmin are.

Pup tunnel[edit]

Pup tunnels are a variant of tunnels inPikmin 4 that have a metal door. OnlyOatchi may travel through a pup tunnel, and he will instantlydisband all Pikmin in his squad upon entering. Oatchi will have an animation for squeezing through the pipe, during which switching leader is impossible, before he appears on a higher ledge.

Pikmin 3[edit]

• Tropical Wilds: There is one located near theWhiptongue Bulborb right at the main exit of the landing site. Burrowing through it leads to the ledges to go up to theArmored Cannon Larva.
• Distant Tundra:
  • There is one located under theCupid's Grenade near the landing site. This allows the leaders to traverse between their landing site and the small area withPyroclasmic Slooches andCrimson Candypop Buds. It provides a shortcut for Pikmin that are carrying pieces of theDawn Pustules.
  • There is one behind theS.S. Drake, which can be used to go to the place whereAlph andBrittany must exchange Pikmin before the main bridge is completed. It provides a shortcut for Pikmin that are carrying fragments of the bridge.
• Beastly Caverns (Collect Treasure!): There is one located north of theSPERO. This allowsRed Pikmin to traverse to the area behind theReinforced wall.
• Tundra: There is one located under the Cupid's Grenade near the landing site, in the same place as in the Distant Tundra.

Pikmin 4[edit]

Areas

• Hero's Hideaway: Two tunnels are found in the area. One connects the floor to theStargazer's Spot, while the other connects the floor with the kitchen countertop.
• Primordial Thicket: Two narrow tunnels lead away from the Autumnal Gully. One is to the west, leading to the area with thePuffstool, while other is to the north, past aDandori Challenge, leading to the area underneath theDandori Battle.

Caves

• Below-Grade Discotheque:
  • In sublevel 3, a tunnel is used to connect the main island with a smaller one containing a pile of 15Gold Nuggets.
  • In sublevel 4, a pup tunnel leads to aclipboard leading to the button that lowers the level's iron fences.
• Engulfed Castle: In sublevel 2, a pup tunnel leads to a button that lowers the level's iron fences.
• Doppelgänger's Den: In sublevel 1, a tunnel is used to connect the bottom-left part of the sublevel with the top-left part. In sublevel 2, a tunnel is used by Pikmin to carry back theLife Controller when the blueswitch gate is active.
• Dream Home:
  • A tunnel is found south of the landing site, connecting it with the area where theLeisure Car.
  • A pup tunnel is found in the north area of the stage, allowing Oatchi to reach the top part of the map.
• Cavern for a King: In sublevel 12, a tunnel is found across the room containing theSpectralids and is used to access the entrance to the next sublevel.

Dandori Challenges

• Hotshock Canyon: A pup tunnel leads to a button that lowers the level's iron fences.
• Cliff-Hanger's Hold: A pup tunnel leads to the upper areas of the map, requiring Oatchi to lower theclimbing rope the rookie Rescue Officer requires.
