Poison

Poison is ahazard, present inPikmin 2,Pikmin 4, andHey! Pikmin. It takes the form of a gas, colored reddish-purple inPikmin 2 andHey! Pikmin and turquoise inPikmin 4, and is fatal toPikmin that are notWhite Pikmin,Bulbmin, orGlow Pikmin – they will begin choking if the top of their stem is covered in poison gas. Choking Pikmin will run around in apanic and, if not saved bywhistling, will eventually succumb and die.

Poison gas is completely harmless toleaders, presumably because theirspacesuits filter the air. However, the poison emitted by theComedy Bomb theTitan Dweevil wields can damage and knock leaders down, andOatchi is affected by poison the same way as most Pikmin are if thePup Sniff Saver has not been acquired.

Poison is less prevalent and a bit different inHey! Pikmin. It only appears in the finalsectors, theLushlife Murk andThe Final Stretch, and mostly takes on the form of purple poisonous lakes and attacks fromthe final boss. Any Pikmin that falls in, or even Olimar himself, will instantly die. Poison geysers also appear exclusively in theBurning Bog, and they also kill Pikmin immediately, despite only harming Olimar. Since there are no White Pikmin in this game, poison must be avoided with careful movements and timing.

Sources[edit]

Poison gas does not appear by itself, but is rather emitted from a few sources.

  • Poison emitterPoison emitter Poison emitter – obstacles sticking out from the ground that release steady streams of poison gas.
  • Poison geyser – geysers inHey! Pikmin that periodically release columns of poison gas.
  • Munge Dweevil Munge Dweevilenemies that release poison gas when attacked.
  • Doodlebug Doodlebug – enemies that release a cloud of poison every time they move.
  • Titan Dweevil Titan Dweevil – the finalboss inPikmin 2, with a weapon capable of emitting poison gas.
  • Ujadani Ujadani – rare insects that have a small chance of dispersing a quick cloud of poison when attacked.
  • Spornet Spornet – flying enemies that drop balls of poison.
  • Berserk Leech Hydroe Berserk Leech Hydroe – the final boss inHey! Pikmin, capable of spitting balls of poison, or poison beams.
  • Startle Spore Startle Spore – large enemies that attack with their long tongue which creates a poisonous pool.

  • Moldy Slooch Moldy Slooch – a weak enemy often seen on large patches of mold that disappear once defeated.
  • Toxstool Toxstool – releases a large poison cloud that can revive defeated enemies, mushrooms, and mold.

It is worth noting that the attacks of certain enemies (particularly theGroovy Long Legs,Puffstool,Ancient Sirehound,Smoky Progg,Sputtlefish,Toady Bloyster, andVehemoth Phosbat) are often mistakenly referred to as poisonous due to their gas-like appearance, but these are in fact different hazards (confusion,Gloom, andpanic) which White Pikmin have no immunity against.

White Pikmin[edit]

Main article:White Pikmin.

One of the White Pikmin's most notable traits is their relation to poison. They can withstand poisonous gas without choking, making them ideal to destroy poison sources. In addition, the White Pikmin themselves are poisonous – if anenemy ingests one, they will instantly receive somedamage, and some particles will flow out of them, similar to the ones released from poison gas.

In other games[edit]

Pikmin[edit]

Poison as a game mechanic is absent inPikmin, although theSmoky Progg releases a sludgy substance that instantly kills Pikmin caught by it, something often known informally among fans as just "poison".

The Pikmin Official Player's Guide describes the purple spores produced by thePuffstool which createsMushroom Pikmin as "poisonous".[1]

Pikmin 3[edit]

Poison may have meant to feature inPikmin 3, as a poison geyser can befound unused in the files, and White Pikmin do return inPikmin 3, albeit only inMission Mode andBingo Battle. If the poison geysers are hacked in, White Pikmin are the only Pikmin which are immune to them.[2] White Pikmin do not exhibit any special resistance towards any other element in the game.

There are other effects in the game which many have interpreted as poison, but are not. TheVehemoth Phosbat releases a cloud of purple dust, resembling poison gas fromPikmin 2. The effects of this gas are similar, in that the dust makes the affected Pikmin start choking and run around in a frenzy, and can be removed with a blow of the whistle. Likewise, theToady Bloyster and theSputtlefish can emit clouds of ink which have identical effects. The key differences between these effects and poison are that they do not result in death, fade away after some time, andWhite Pikmin are just as susceptible to the effects if hacked or glitched into position. Therefore these effects are less like poison, and simply cause apanic.

Super Smash Bros. series[edit]

In theSuper Smash Bros. series, poison is a thematic element to the properties of White Pikmin, causing their latch attack and grabbing attack to deal much more damage than other Pikmin types. This is represented by thedarkness effect, which causes opponents to emit dark purple energy when damaged.
