Warning:the following article or section contains majorspoilers about the final boss ofPikmin 3.
This article is about the creature itself. For information on the form that chasesCaptain Olimar, seeMysterious Life-Form.

ThePlasm Wraith (アメニュウドウ?, lit.: "Candy/Rain Nyuudou") is the finalboss inPikmin 3 and is responsible for capturing Captain Olimar. It is a creature with the ability to morph and change shape by controlling the unknown gelatinous golden substance that makes up its body, plasm. Its main form makes it a vaguely-humanoidWaterwraith-like being. Its plasm even allows it to create other semi-independent entities.

The creature is encountered at theFormidable Oak, having taken Olimar captive with what appears to be curiosity rather than maliciousness. Efforts to rescue Olimar cause the being to enter analternate slug-like form and slowly crawl towards theKoppaites, attempting to retake him, until it reaches the outside of the oak. Once this occurs, the Wraith assumes its real form, detains Olimar in its nucleus and begins to attack the explorers, starting the final boss fight. Defeating the beast immediately activates the game's ending.

As with all final bosses in the series thus far, the path leading up to it and/or the boss fight itself requires the knowledge and use of every single Pikmin type.

Plot[edit]

The Plasm Wraith and Captain Olimar.
The creature with Olimar; notice how it seems to care for him.

When Olimar first arrived at the Formidable Oak, he saw a shiny golden substance at the top of the tower, and decided to investigate.Louie expressed discomfort and chose to stay behind, letting Olimar go on ahead without him. In thesecret file reward video, "At the Oak", Olimar is seen surveying the area, while Louie is running away from something. Right as the video ends, the viewer can hear loud footsteps and the Wraith's roar, implying the eminent capture of Olimar.

At first, the Plasm Wraith was curious and playful towards Olimar and did no harm to him. However, when Olimar tried to leave, it became hostile, triggering hissuit's auto-sleep function and dragging him back to its cave. It became protective of Olimar to the point that it would attack anything that showed interest in him. The exact reason for this bizarre behavior remains unclear.

At some point in the game's story,Louie is taken in by the Koppaites and reveals Olimar's whereabouts, prompting them to head over to the Formidable Oak. When first spotted at the top of the area, the Plasm Wraith transforms into a spherical opaque blob after sucking up Olimar into its body in order to protect him, but the Koppaites order thePikmin to destroy it. They decide to carry Olimar back to theS.S. Drake, but as the Pikmin cannot see a way back, it is decided to have them followBrittany, and the Koppaites enter the cave system. As soon as they enter, the Plasm Wraith, now in itsMysterious Life-Form version, drops from the cave ceiling and begins chasing the explorers through the cave. The player must stay ahead of it while overcoming the various obstacles present within the cave system in order to safely escape.

At the end of the cavern, Olimar, the Pikmin, and the Koppaites eventually reach sunlight, relatively close to theS.S. Drake, but get ambushed one last time by the Mysterious Life-Form. After absorbing Olimar once again and morphing into the Plasm Wraith form proper, the final boss fight begins.

Even though the Wraith is eventually defeated by the Koppaites, it is revealed to still be alive in the finalcutscene. One can notice this because the small trail of plasm that remains after its defeat slowly crawls away from the site. It can also be briefly glimpsed as theS.S. Drake leaves the planet, already fully reformed up to it, and waving its fully outstretched arms at the leaving ship, as if to express anger or frustration at the departure of the Drake and the people on board.

Biology[edit]

The creature is composed entirely of a golden gelatinous substance called plasm. Throughout the Wraith's many shapes and states, the plasm can be in one of two states: translucent, which is slightly more liquid and has the ability to trap Pikmin, or opaque, which is a bit more chunky and can be damaged by the Pikmin. It has the ability to morph and contort the plasm, and as such, its body parts, in order to serve various needs. It can eject blobs of plasm that take a form and behavior of their own, becominghazardous obstacles or copies of otherenemies encounter previously.

Forms[edit]

The Plasm Wraith at its smallest size.
The Plasm Wraith in its humanoid form, at its smallest size.

During the events inside the cavern of the Formidable Oak, where the creature is labeled as theMysterious Life-Form, it mostly takes on a slug-like form, with its body liquid and transparent. Itsnucleus can be seen floating inside, sitting in the back half.

Its main form is instead vaguely humanoid, and is used when fighting the explorers outside the cave as well as when caressing Olimar when they first reach the top of the Formidable Oak. In this form it is mostly featureless, has small arms, and has a pronounced stomach and hips similar to aVenus figurine. Its left arm is normally a stub that ends shortly after the shoulder, while its right arm is only a bit longer than that. Both arms come out of the top section of the body, which could be seen either as a torso or as a head. In this top section is a hole that goes from the front to the back, which can expand or shrink, mostly when it absorbs or spits out blobs of plasm or consumes Pikmin. Thus it can be thought of as a mouth. Its arms can also be elongated and made pointy, inflictingstabbing damage when used.

It can also be seen in a few other forms: if it captures Olimar and tries to take it away inside the cavern, it retains the slug shape but becomes solid and opaque. When the Koppaites first discover it, it transforms into a solid sphere to protect Olimar, and then melts into a motionless transparent puddle around him when damaged enough. The same transparent puddle can be seen if it is beaten when it tries to take Olimar back inside the labyrinth. When everyone enters the cave and the beast ambushes them, it drips from the cave's ceiling in transparent plasmic chunks, before assembling the slug shape.

Health[edit]

When outside of its humanoid form, it can be damaged and defeated by the Pikmin like any other creature: by being hit and losinghealth. During this process it can lose some blobs of plasm, which shakes some Pikmin off, but the blobs soon rejoin it. Its humanoid form is more complex.

In its humanoid appearance, its life force is essentially controlled by the plasm it has on its body, which can come off or be reabsorbed. This is indicated in-game by thehealth wheel, which is uniquely of a bevelled, gold look, and corresponds to the amount of plasm left in its body. Its color will still turn red to indicate low health like other bosses, but has a lighter shade. The more plasm the creature has on its body, the larger it is. The smaller it is, the faster it walks, but since its steps are smaller, it covers ground at around the same speed regardless of size. That said, the area of effect of its stabbing attack remains roughly the same regardless of size. At its smallest, it is roughly twice as tall asAlph, while at its largest it is easily dozens of times taller. When it becomes too small to do anything other than walk, twist, stab, and fly, hitting it sufficiently will cause it to collapse, as it is too weak to continue fighting.

When its body is attacked by Pikmin, small splashes of plasm visually come out, indicating the Pikmin are able to damage the substance that makes up its body. After enough damage has been caused, a blob of plasm drops onto the floor. Any blob that is on the floor can be attacked by Pikmin, and once destroyed it disintegrates and can no longer be absorbed, meaning that amount of plasm is gone from the fight forever. Other ways for it to lose plasm from its body include spitting them out to formElemental Plasm, slinging them when shaking Pikmin off, or splashing them off if it crashes to the ground when airborne.

Elemental Plasm[edit]

Elemental Plasms are chunks of plasm that take on a specialhazardous form. Elemental Plasms are controlled by anucleus, which needs to be attacked in order to destroy the obstacle. These nuclei have their own (typical, not golden)health wheel.

In its slug-like form, the beast can transform into one itself, while in its humanoid form, it can spit them out. When spitting, it ejects out a large mass of plasm onto the arena along with the nucleus. During this period, the latter can be attacked, but shortly after, the plasm around it forms into a solid sphere which can also be attacked. After a small period, the entire structure morphs into the Elemental Plasm.

Elemental Plasm has four possible forms, each of which can only be effectively challenged with certain Pikmin types given each have a specifichazard associated with it:

  • A pulsating bed of red plasm onfire, with the nucleus in the middle. Because the nucleus is slightly above ground, Pikmin cannot reach it by walking there and must instead be thrown at it directly. WhileRed Pikmin are recommended, it is possible to use other Pikmin types.Rock Pikmin can also cause damage the nucleus and can then bewhistled back before they burn to death. In addition, the nucleus itself is safe, and only the flames underneath it cause damage, so a latched Pikmin will be safe for a while until the nucleus rotates in such a way where the Pikmin touches the fire. Finally, the flames themselves also take a while to come out even after the red plasm is formed.
  • Anelectrical sphere. The Elemental Plasm will form a spike underneath the nucleus, setting it high up in the air, and will then generate an electric barrier around it, making it resemble aplasma globe. OnlyYellow Pikmin can reach high enough and sustain the force-field, though other Pikmin can destroy it if they're thrown as it's rising up, before the electrical field arrives.
  • A bubble ofwater, with the nucleus in the center.Blue Pikmin must be thrown in the bubble, so they can swim to the nucleus and damage it.
  • Acrystal cube with the nucleus inside. The cube slowly tumbles around the stage, crushing Pikmin. Only Rock Pikmin can break the cube, chipping away different shards at a time. The cube is composed of 216 shards, each one avoxel, in a 6x6x6 formation. The second a Rock Pikmin reaches the nucleus, the Elemental Plasm is instantly destroyed.

Nucleus[edit]

Mapping of each of the Elemental Plasm core's sides. The model from the game's files was referenced when creating this.
Collage of the Elemental Plasm's nucleus's faces.

A nucleus is responsible for controlling a large chunk of plasm into doing something. It has a cubic shape and a golden opaque color, and its composition and appearance can change:

  • In its slug form, its nucleus is normally a single solid cube, though it periodically splits into a 3 × 3 × 3voxel formation, with the center cube missing, and gently moves every voxel in a simple pattern before rejoining them.
  • If the slug form captures Olimar, the nucleus envelops Olimar inside of it, by spawning the six faces out of nowhere and closing them around him.
  • If the slug form transforms into an Elemental Plasm, the nucleus will be a fixed solid cube.
  • If the slug form is damaged enough to the point where it releases Olimar, the nucleus will burst into the air as an explosion of 26 independently-rotating cubes (same as the previously-mentioned 3 × 3 × 3 formation). These stay hovering in the air and slowly come closer and closer together to assemble a normal cube as the creaturerevives.
  • Elemental Plasm spat out by the Plasm Wraith in the final boss fight will have the cube split into a 6 × 6 × 6 voxel formation, representing a hollow cube with a different pattern on each face (see image).
  • In the cutscene where Olimar is rescued at last, the nucleus spat out by the Plasm Wraith is a completely solid cube, not hollow. It slowly reveals Olimar, who overlaps with the shape's solid interior.

Whether the humanoid form has a nucleus inside or not cannot be seen in-game. Despite being made of plasm, the enemies fought inside of the Formidable Oak do not have a visible nucleus either. The nucleus was possibly inspired bycubic pyrite, also commonly known as "Fool's Gold". Narratively, this choice portrays a sense of irony after viewing the entries inOlimar's Log, where he states his hopes to "Find Gold" while searching for treasure.

Behavior[edit]

This section is for the creature's behavior in its humanoid form. For the slug form, seeMysterious Life-Form#Behavior.

General[edit]

Typically, the Plasm Wraith merely walks around its arena, approaching any Pikmin or leaders it spots. Once close enough, it will bend down, start preparing its arms, and eventually stab down at the floor a few times in very quick succession. Any leaders stabbed by this attack get knocked back, and Pikmin that are notRock Pikmin will get impaled in its arms (around 5 Pikmin on average), which it then brings up to the hole in its body to "eat" them, killing them in the process.

Shaking[edit]

Once it feels the need to shake Pikmin off, it can do a few different things, as explained in theElemental Plasm section. Its most basic move for the job involves twisting its top half, contorting itself, then quickly unwinding in the opposite direction, ejecting any latched Pikmin off. This process also expels a few blobs of plasm onto the floor, unless its size is so small it has no more plasm it can drop.

Inhale[edit]

The Plasm Wraith reabsorbs previously-used plasm.
In the process of reabsorbing used plasm.

At some points in the fight, it may decide to stop in place and inhale from its "mouth". Any plasm blobs on the ground will float up and be absorbed, getting added to the total plasm in its body. Under normal conditions, the Plasm Wraith chooses to do this if enough blobs lie on the floor, after some seconds.

If one or more Elemental Plasm obstacles have stood around for a while, the Wraith will perform a typical inhale but will break the objects into blobs of plasm so it can inhale those as well; doing this makes the Elemental Plasm's nucleus shrink in size and vanish. If the obstacle has only been in the fight for a few seconds, any inhaling move will leave it alone, however. If an Elemental Plasm was recently broken, the blobs that come out of it receive a grace period where they cannot be absorbed for some seconds, allowing the player the chance to destroy the blobs after successfully defeating the hazardous obstacle without the Plasm Wraith's bad inhale timing undoing their work immediately. That said, whether any freshly-ejected blob from the creature twisting itself receives this grace period or not is random.

Elemental Plasm[edit]

As long as the health wheel shows 75% remaining or less, the Wraith adds spitting oneElemental Plasm to its attack repertoire. This also allows it to have one Elemental Plasm obstacle out in the arena at most. While it shows 25% remaining or less, it instead spits three at most, and is allowed to have three in the arena at most.

With the spitting ability available, whenever it decides to shake Pikmin off, it randomly chooses between:

  • Twisting, followed by spitting 1 to 3 Elemental Plasms.
  • Spit a singular Elemental Plasm.

The decision is taken before the moves actually start, so if, for instance, it had 76% health before twirling and 74% after, it can never spit any Elemental Plasm since it was not at the threshold when the decision took place.

This spitting move also knocks off any Pikmin that are latched on. This decision isn't limited by the amount of Elemental Plasm obstacles in the arena, however if there is already the maximum number allowed in the arena, then the spitting move will shake Pikmin off and do nothing else. Each spat Elemental Plasm will be of a randomly chosen type, and there can be multiple of the same type in the arena out at once.

If it does not have enough plasm in its body to spit out and generate an Elemental Plasm, it will not do so, and also won't do the spitting move in vain.

Flight[edit]

As long as its health wheel shows 50% or less, the Wraith becomes able to fly.

With the ability to fly available, whenever it decides to stab, it randomly chooses between:

  • Stabbing while grounded.
  • Rising up to the air and stabbing while airborne.

After reaching its desired altitude, which is out of the reach of typical Pikminthrows, it bends down and stabs at the floor. If after the stabbing jabs there are still more targets nearby, it will attack once more. Once it's done, it will float gently back down. Unlike it stabbing attack on the ground, where its bottom half stays put and it attacks in front of it only, the Plasm Wraith is able to turn around while preparing to stab, making it reach a much larger angle than before.

During this state it can only be reached byWinged Pikmin, or, with some effort,Yellow Pikmin. If it is hit with enough Pikmin while flying, it will fall down, losing some plasm as it hits the ground, and then get back up shortly after. When it takes off to the air, or when it lands back down on its own, any latched Pikmin will be knocked off.

Defeat Bosses![edit]

The Plasm Wraith is also the final opponent inDefeat Bosses!. Players are given 12 minutes to take it out and 100 Pikmin, which can be found around the arena. The path that leads to where the Onion is in story mode is blocked off by a "keep out" sign. The cave exit is not blocked off, but it cannot be entered at all, unlessglitches are used. There are 20 of each Pikmin type, 10 of each type in the ground to be plucked, and 10 of each type already in the squad. Players can control Alph (player 1's starting leader), Brittany (player 2's starting leader), and Charlie. Their order inPikmin 3 is Alph, Brittany, Charlie, and inPikmin 3 Deluxe theorder is Brittany, Charlie, Alph.

Strategy[edit]

The following article or section containsguides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

After wrestling with the creature inside the cave as theMysterious Life-Form, it absorbs Olimar and starts the final fight as the humanoid-shaped Plasm Wraith. You can freely go from the arena to the landing site. Although it is not necessary, you may want to assemble 20 Pikmin of each type. Send the other two leaders out of its reach, as this fight only requires one leader. Be prepared to lose a lot of Pikmin.

Once the fight begins, throw some Pikmin at its stomach. As soon as you see blobs of plasm fall off its body due to the Pikmin attacks, throw Pikmin at them to destroy them.

It will actively attack Pikmin with itsstabbing attack, but mainly prefers to target the leaders. If any Pikmin aside from Rock Pikmin are in range of this attack, they will be skewered and eaten. You can use one leader as a distraction, and have another handle all the Pikmin, but this may be difficult to manage. While it is doing this attack, it is unwise to attack it head-on, as it will not be fazed by attacks, and can easily kill the Pikmin. Instead, throw just a few Pikmin at it, preferably its backside, until it tries to shake Pikmin off by twisting its body. This will cause additional plasm to fly off of its body.

In the second half of the fight, when it becomes airborne, either bombard it with Winged Pikmin so it is overwhelmed and falls, or stay far away until it drops back down.

Elemental Plasms[edit]

Once it spits outElemental Plasm, you can either wait to see what it is, or you can start attacking it right away to get some free damage in. If you choose the latter, be prepared to whistle the non-invulnerable Pikmin back at the first sign of danger. Here's how to best handle each type of Elemental Plasm:

  • Water bubble: ThrowBlue Pikmin somewhere inside the bubble. You don't need to aim since the Pikmin will swim to the nucleus on their own.
  • Electricity sphere: ThrowYellow Pikmin at the nucleus directly.
  • Fire bed: ThrowRed Pikmin at the nucleus directly. If you're feeling fast and reckless, you can throw all kinds of Pikmin at the nucleus and hopefully destroy the Elemental Plasm before the flames come on.
  • Crystal cube:Lock-on to the nucleus so you're consistently hitting the same spot, reducing the number of shards that need to be broken. Then throw as manyRock Pikmin as you can. Be wary of throwing non-Rock Pikmin at it since they may end up crushed before you can call them back.

Destroying Elemental Plasms will leave behind a large amount of plasm that must also be destroyed. If there are multiple Elemental Plasms in the arena, focus on the one farthest away from the Plasm Wraith so you have the most time to destroy it without being interrupted.

No deaths[edit]

Despite this being a very difficult boss, itis possible to beat it without any Pikmin lost. To make things simpler, use one leader at a time, but be sure to switch leaders when the current one's suit is very damaged. Bring out as manyRock Pikmin as you have, preferably flowered, since they are the only Pikmin type immune to the Wraith's instant-kill attacks: the armstabs and the crystal Elemental Plasm'scrushing.

For the first phase, simply pummel it and the plasm that falls off. Worry more about your leader than the Pikmin, since they cannot be killed in any way for now. Once Elemental Plasms are introduced, here's what you should do for each one:

  • Fire bed: Throw just three or four Rock Pikmin at the nucleus, then whistle them when they start burning. Repeat until it breaks, then attack the plasm that drops off.
  • Electrical field: You have a brief window to throw Rock Pikmin at the nucleus before the electricity field spawns in and it floats too high for them to reach. If you miss your chance, forget it and just try to avoid it, as the electricity will paralyze your Pikmin and possibly knock them back into other hazards.
  • Water bubble: Rock Pikmin have no way of attacking it at all, so ignore it completely and take extra care to whistle any Pikmin suffocating, otherwise theywill die.
  • Crystal cube: Destroy it like normal.

After the Plasm Wraith's health is lowered enough, it will have been beaten. Try to keep the Rock Pikmin in your group and organized, as having Pikmin all over the arena makes it very easy to lose track of some of them and have them die to a hazard out of sight.

If a large group of Pikmin is too difficult to keep track of, another option would be to bring around 30 or 40 Rock Pikmin instead. This should reduce the risk of casualties from any Elemental Plasm. A smaller group is a bit more manageable, but will not be quite as powerful as a full group, and thus may make the battle take slightly longer. Be prepared to take two days if you choose this option and are not fast enough.

What a marvel this creature is! Constantly adapting to new threats, it can manipulate fire, water, electricity, and its own body to form wings or an armored carapace. It takes several squads of Pikmin on frequently rotating duty to keep up with its shifting nature. How I wish I could construct anything so effortlessly flexible! Ahem... Its attacks leave behind little pieces of itself, so if you can eliminate those before it reforms, you can wear it down little by little.

Wow, it really did not want to let go of Captain Olimar. Is that budding inter-species romance I smell? Anyway, I bet that gunk would make for some good lotion. I should've bottled some up so I could sell it back on Koppai.

This thing doesn't know what it wants! One minute it's soft, one minute it's hard. First it's big, then it's small. It hunts Olimar but doesn't want to hurt him. We're practically doing it a favor by taking it out! Anyway... That Olimar guy must ooze charisma to get such an alien creature to follow him anywhere. He's a ship captain and I'm just a squad captain, but that still gives us something in common! I oughtta be taking notes!

Plasm Wraith
Unknown species
Unknown family

This unusual life-form consists of an amorphous body around a hard, cubic core. The body can shift not only into different shapes but into different substances. It reminds me very much of the waterwraith, and at first I wondered if it was also an ectoplasmic incarnation. However, enough others have seen and encountered it to dispel this theory. The creatures living near the plasm wraith must be formed from its gelatinous substance, since they all liquefy upon its death. It's not clear what purpose they serve for the wraith. It's currently unknown what caused the hole in its torso—some sort of manifested psychic wound?—but the search for this cause may lead us down the path to unraveling the history of evolution on this planet.

Pikmin 3 Prima Guide[edit]

The Plasm Wraith is located in the Formidable Oak. This resilient creature uses spiked appendages to skewer its victims, and is capable of summoning hazardous Elemental Plasms. All Pikmin types are useful against this enemy, so assemble a well-balanced squad before you enter this battle.

When you encounter the Plasm Wraith, use Rock Pikmin to attack the creature from a distance. When the Plasm Wraith begins to fall apart, destroy the puddles of loose plasm before the creature is able to reclaim them.

Rock Pikmin are immune to the Plasm Wraith's direct attacks, so they're your best option for the bulk of the encounter. Once the creature begins summoning Elemental Plasms, however, use the corresponding Pikmin to destroy each hazard. Use Winged Pikmin to attack the Plasm Wraith each time it flies into the air.

Attack the Plasm Wraith to weaken the creature, then destroy the loose plasm to prevent the creature from regaining its strength.

Naming[edit]

  • Common name: Plasm Wraith. "Plasm" is an alternate form of "plasma", possibly referring to the liquid component of certain bodily fluids (blood, lymph, etc.), or to one of the four fundamental states of matter. "Wraith" is a traditional term for a ghost or spirit.
  • Japanese nickname:アメニュウドウ?.ニュウドウ? translates to "Bald Head" or the act of entering Buddhist priesthood, and is particularly used to a type ofyōkai known as Nyuudou orŌnyūdō. Just like with theWaterwraith,アメ? means "candy", though? means "rain" – it can also be noted that it alwaysrains during the Plasm Wraith's boss battle (provided that no exploits are used).アメ? can also be short for "amoeba" (written in katakana like "ameba"), a unicellular organism usually found in water and Nyuudou.
  • Japanese name:セイヨウコガネアメビト?, lit.: "Western Golden Candy/Rain Person". The Waterwraith's Japanese name also includesアメビト?, lit.: "Candy/Rain Person".
  • Scientific name: Unknown.
  • Internal names: Internally, the creature is calledmetaboss2, which is a follow-up to theinternal name of the Mysterious Life-Form. The nucleii of the Elemental Plasms it spits are calledmetabuka, where部下? means "subordinate".

Trivia[edit]

  • The Plasm Wraith is the onlyenemy in thePikmin series to have an "unknown" scientific name.
  • While Olimar's notes mentions that the Formidable Oak's creatures are made of the "gelatinous substance" that composes the Plasm Wraith, the Japanese version specifies that they are composed of the Plasm Wraith's cells.
  • This creature, along with theTitan Dweevil, are the only creatures so far in the series to exhibit the ability to harness all of the mainhazard elements present in their respective games; all other element-based enemies are only able to wield one element.
    • TheAncient Sirehound utilizes almost all elements present in its game, but lacks water and poison attacks (although it features a similar but deadlier hazard:Gloom).
  • The Wraith's trophy inSuper Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS and Wii U erroneously depicts it in theQuaggled Mireclops' arena. Bizarrely, the trophy for the Quaggled Mireclops itself doesn't feature terrain of any kind.
