TheMasterhop (ヌシガエル?, lit.: "Master Frog") is an enlarged version of theYellow Wollyhop, found exclusively inPikmin 4. According to Olimar’s notes, this abnormal size was established via a “safe haven” for a Yellow Wollyhop to thrive in. Much like its smaller counterparts, the Masterhop attacks by squishing Pikmin flat (besidesRock Pikmin), only with a larger radius of attack, also being able to destroy sand floors. It is fought as aboss in theSeafloor Resort, but is otherwise a normalenemy in other locations.

Masterhops tend to idle around a specific location, passively jumping around and rubbing their cheeks, showing more similarities to the Yellow Wollyhop. Masterhops (and others in theAmphituber family) are most likely types of mutant earthen frogs, but it is unconfirmed which type of frog exactly based them.

Behavior[edit]

Just like the smaller counterpart, Masterhop tries to jump up and fall on the player to crush them and their Pikmin. Notably, similar to theQuaggled Mireclops, if the ground is sandy, the Masterhop can sink the ground below it into puddles of water, making it dangerous to Pikmin without animmunity to it. The Masterhop will also look at its target before jumping like theYellow Wollyhop. This gives you a chance to move away from it before it attacks.

Strategy[edit]

The following article or section containsguides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

InSeafloor Resort, the Masterhop will create small pools of water on the sandy arena with its jumping attacks, making Ice Pikmin a little riskier to use against it.

In theGiant's Hearth, two Masterhops can be found next to some active sprinklers. The active sprinklers can provide less room to fight against them if non-Blue Pikmin are used, but it is possible to lure the Masterhops away from them, allowing for other types to be safely used.

Meanwhile, in theCliff-Hanger's Hold, thanks to the cave providing some wildRock Pikmin, you can simply send your Rock Pikmin to repeatedly attack the Masterhop here, since they cannot die to it.

Due to its large body, it can wipe out a ton of Pikmin in a single attack. Keeping your Pikmin onOatchi is beneficial to prevent Pikmin casualties. This is especially helpful in Seafloor Resort, where Oatchi can carry Pikmin over the small pools of water that form on the sandy area from the enemy's attacks. The Masterhop can be killed by charging Oatchi at it with a large amount ofPurple Pikmin,Rock Pikmin orRed Pikmin, but Rock Pikmin are best used due to their immunity to being crushed. Alternatively, you can freeze it withIce Pikmin or anIce Blast midair, which will kill it instantly upon landing.

Notes[edit]

Dalmo's notes[edit]

Wiggly elastic skin is the proper fit for this bouncing beauty! Slippery-smooth and shiny-sleek, its skin is soft as a baby's cheeks! Though you might want to be wary of getting close enough to touch it. Just watching it move will make you yearn for skin that is more radiantly lustrous too.

Olimar's notes[edit]

It's widely believed that Yellow Wollyhops and other related species can continue to grow until they start breeding, but after that their growth rate plummets. However, in safe environments—ones that lack natural predators, for example—some individuals of the species may forgo reproduction altogether and continue growing until they reach gigantic proportions.

The Yellow Wollyhop's telomerase enzymes are particularly active, which prevents their bodies' cells from aging. Under the right conditions, it's not unusual for some individuals to reach over 50 years in age.

Louie's notes[edit]

Meat can be consumed if first dehydrated with a lot of salt. But the eyeballs and the legs are the best parts.

Text

(Image text: 発達した筋肉で、より高く連続して跳ぶことができる)

特徴 その2 長生きの秘訣

テロメラーゼという酵素が活発で、体内の細胞の老化を防いでいる。
(Image text: 繁殖活動をしないほか、冬眠せず、暖かい場所で越冬する)

Translation

A long-lived Yellow Wollyhop that continues to grow without reproductive activity in an environment without natural enemies, reaching gigantic proportions. Under the right conditions, it can reach over 50 years in age.

Feature #1: Differences from young specimens

It grows to two to three times taller, allowing it to maintain the leaping ability necessary for predation.
(Image text: "Its well-developed muscles allow it to leap higher and in succession")

Feature #2: The secret to their longevity

The telomerase enzymes are active, preventing their bodies' cells from aging.
(Image text: "In addition to not reproducing, they pass the winter in warm places without hibernating")
