TheHydro Dweevil (ルリショイグモ?, lit.: "Lapis Lazuli Carrying Spider"), known as theCaustic Dweevil in the GameCube and Wii versions ofPikmin 2, is anenemy inPikmin 2 andPikmin 4. Non-aggressive members of thedweevil family, Hydro Dweevils pick up anytreasure or enemy corpses they can find, only releasing whenPikmin interfere, at which point they will attack by sprayingwater, which suffocates and drowns all Pikmin types exceptBlue Pikmin,Bulbmin andGlow Pikmin, making those the best choice in battle against them.

Behavior[edit]

Hydro Dweevils scurry about randomly and take no note of the presence of any leader or Pikmin if left undisturbed. When provoked one will attempt to defend itself by releasing a pressurized spurt of water below it. Hydro Dweevils are frail creatures and will die quickly if attacked by even a few Pikmin, or by the punches from a leader.

When a treasure or a corpse of another creature is nearby, a Hydro Dweevil will lift it up onto its head and carry it, making it impossible for Pikmin to collect until it is broken free. When a Dweevil has an item in its possession, it will stay at rest, crouching down, appearing as if it is only the item, until it is approached by a leader or Pikmin, at which point it will stand up and run away.

InPikmin 4, as with all dweevils, the Hydro Dweevil's range of objects it can carry has increased. Any object that is directly carryable by Pikmin, notably useable items from thePack, can now be carried by the Dweevil. This even includesfire starters, although this can only be seen withFiery Dweevils in theGiant's Hearth in-game. Items that can explode, likeBomb Rocks orIce Blasts can be used by the Dweevil when it has a target in its sights, replicating the ability of theVolatile Dweevil fromPikmin 2. It should be noted that Dweevils are not immune to the effects of these bombs, and will immediately die or becomefrozen as a result of the blast.

Areas[edit]

  • Serene Shores
    • There is one Hydro Dweevil in this area. It is located towards the northwest of the area, in the section accessible by completing theEngulfed Castle. In this section, the Dweevil can be found towards the north on the raised section, just past theWhiptongue Bulborb. It will be carrying theJuicy Gaggle.

Caves[edit]

  • Doppelgänger's Den
    • There are two Hydro Dweevils on sublevel 3. They can both be found towards the southwest, in the oval-shaped section full of water. One of the Dweevils will be in the water and the other Dweevil will be underneath theDusk Pustules that are hanging from a cobweb.

Olimar's Shipwreck Tale[edit]

  • Hero's Hideaway
    • There is one Hydro Dweevil in this tale's area. It is located towards the northeasternmost section of the map, in the raised section just north of the stovetop. This section holds aExtraordinary Bolt and requires aclay mound to be built.

Strategy[edit]

The following article or section containsguides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

With Pikmin[edit]

Blue Pikmin,Bulbmin, andGlow Pikmin are technically the safest types to attack a Hydro Dweevil with, as they are all immune to its water blast. In practice, virtually any type of Pikmin squad can swiftly dispatch one, thanks to their extremely low health - a matter made even easier inPikmin 4 if you lock onto its head. As with all common Dweevils,Purple Pikmin are an extremely effective option; a single stomp nearby is guaranteed to stun it, and a direct stomp on its head will inflict enormous damage, almost instantly killing it.

InPikmin 2, if a Hydro Dweevil's health is completely depleted while it is preparing to attack, it will complete its attack firstbefore dying: Stay wary and be prepared to whistle the water off.

Alternative methods[edit]

Hydro Dweevils largely cannot hurt leaders; a direct hit from their water blast will stagger and stun them for a moment but will not actually hurt them. Punching them to death is a very simple affair, even more-so with theRocket Fist, but note that if the Dweevil shakes to knock the leader away, thiswill cause extremely minor damage to them if it hits.

Oatchi will make extremely short work out of any Hydro Dweevil he is sent to attack - he will be similarly immune to its attacks, provided he haslearnt to swim. If hisRush has been upgraded, he can even bowl over multiple in a single charge, killing them instantly.

Notes

Olimar's notes

The caustic dweevil is one member of an insect family known for mimicking objects by carrying them on their backs. Several points of differentiation with other members of the species have been confirmed, such as body color and behavioral patterns, but none of these suggest major deviations in the creature's genetic structure. This makes it clear that it is a relative of the family. When attacked by enemies, the caustic dweevil spits out bodily fluids in response. Space suits corrode and oxidize when they come in contact with this highly acidic liquid.

Louie's notes

Inedible. Effects of consumption include uncontrollable arm flailing and enthusiastic dishwashing.

Dalmo's notes[edit]

It's bewitching to behold the way it skitter-skitters around on those long, slender, lapis-lazuli blue legs while carrying treasure on its back. If, in an excess of excitement, you reach out a hand to touch it, a startling splash should deter you! Be calm and quiet around this beastie.

Pikmin 2 Nintendo Player's Guide[edit]

They'll make your skin crawl on sight, but the worst Caustic Dweevils can do to your troops is to spit water at them. Use only blue Pikmin in the battle if you can, and toss them at the beast's body. If you use other types of troops, be ready to whistle them free from the bubbles.

Naming[edit]

See more:Dweevil family#Naming.
  • Common name: Hydro Dweevil. Hydro is a prefix referring to water. The Hydro Dweevil attacks with high pressure water. In the original English translation, it was named the Caustic Dweevil. Something that is caustic can corrode living tissue, like acid. In this translation,Olimar's notes mentioned that the dweevil attacks with an acidic liquid. This however was a liberty of the localization, and in the Switch port, the dweevil was renamed to the Hydro Dweevil.
  • Japanese nickname:ルリショイグモ?, lit.: "Lapis Lazuli Carrying Spider". Lapis lazuli is a blue stone.
  • Japanese name:セオイカナエグモ?, lit.: "CarryingDing Spider". It is shared with theFiery,Anode,Munge andVolatile Dweevils.
  • Scientific name:Mandarachnia aquadis.Aquadis is similar to "aqua", relating to water. Prior to the Switch port, the scientific name wasMandarachnia sulfurnid. It uses the wordsulfurnid, referring tosulfuric acid.
  • Internal names: Internally, it is calledwaterotakara, a combination of "water" and "otakara" ("treasure").
  • Prerelease: Before being named Caustic Dweevil in the original version, they were initially called Acidic Dweevils, according to the early English script left unused insidePikmin 2's files.[1]
