TheGiant Breadbug (オオパンモドキ?, lit.: "GiantPseudo Bread") is aboss inPikmin 2 and inPikmin 4. Unlike otherBreadbugs, this one is large and shaped almost perfectly cubical, looking like a whole loaf of bread, making it the largest species in theBreadbug family. It acts the same as normal Breadbugs, but is harder to damage by "rejection" from the pod. It is the least aggressive boss inPikmin 2 (theboss theme music is not even played, though anexclusive tune is played only in the specific cave sublevel). The more recognizable habitat is located on the last sublevel (6) of theGlutton's Kitchen and consists of only two other Breadbugs, electrical wires, andAnode Beetles. This creature is also found in theSnack Pit inChallenge Mode, and in the final sublevel of thePlunder Palace inPikmin 4 (its only location in that game). The Giant Breadbug can instantlyreplenish its HP if it collects an object into its den.

Carrying power[edit]

Pikmin 4[edit]

The Giant Breadbug's carrying power is always 30. If Oatchi uses Swallow to steal an item it is carrying, it will become angry and charge.

Caves[edit]

  • Plunder Palace
    • There are two Giant Breadbug's on sublevel 5. The first Giant Breadbug can be found on the raised pathways in the center of the map, accessible by building theclay mound. This Giant Breadbug will be dragging aroundleafling in a loop, until the clay mound is built. Once built, it will drag it to the nearest hiding spot. The second Giant Breadbug is located in the middle of the raised pathways, near the loneDwarf Bulbear, thePerforated Raft and the aforementioned clay mound. The first Giant Breadbug holds threeDisk of Angry Wisdoms, and the second Giant Breadbug holds theS.S. Berry.

Strategy[edit]

The following article or section containsguides.
The strategies shown are just suggestions.

InPikmin 2, there are three ways to damage the Giant Breadbug, each with their own quirks: by letting it hit its head on the Research Pod, throwing Purple Pikmin at it, or swarming it whilstpetrified.

The standard way to defeat this enemy involves you waiting until it latches onto atreasure or defeated creature, such as the nearby Anode Beetles, or Breadbugs. Then, toss onto orswarm the treasure with as manyPikmin as possible (preferably twice as much as the minimum weight; this is of course made easier ifPurple Pikmin are used) and watch them drag the helpless Giant Breadbug toward theResearch Pod. Like with normal Breadbugs, should there not be enough Pikmin on the treasure, they will be pulled into the Giant Breadbug's den and killed.

When the enemy hits the pod, it loses almost half itshealth. The process can then be repeated as many times as necessary to take it down. You should note two things however: if the Giant Breadbug carries something back to its den successfully, it fully replenishes its life, wasting all of your hard work damaging it. Secondly, you'll need to bring it to the Research Pod more than once, so make sure that there are enough carriable objects around to work with. This can be harder if there are small Breadbugs around taking out objects into their own dens. To help with this, you can leave some Pikmin to distract the other Breadbugs, you can leave the Anode Beetles alone until you want to turn them into carriable corpses, and you can useeggs as a last resort – if an egg hasMitites, you can get yourself some extra corpses to work with.

If there are no more corpses, the only other normal way to damage the boss is by throwing Purple Pikmin on top of it, which can prove to be challenging, especially with a small number of Purple Pikmin. Each Purple takes away about one twentieth of the Giant Breadbug's health.

Finally, the only other way to damage it is topetrify it and then just send any Pikmin to attack it. However, for some bizarre reason, after the Giant Breadbug hits its head on the Research Pod once, it becomes impossible to petrify it from there on out, until the cave is exited.

Defeating the Giant Breadbug inPikmin 4 is almost identical toPikmin 2, except that it's much harder to damage them with Purple Pikmin. It is easier to throw Yellow Pikmin on top of it, as 10 of them will be enough to crush it and deal a large amount of damage. They will also charge your party after being hit by theS.S. Beagle, knocking down any Pikmin (orOatchi) in their path. This won't kill them, but it will cause them to lose their flowers. This charge is also capable of killing other enemies.[1], and works similarly to Oatchi'scharge. The Giant Breadbug can also shake off Pikmin that it is engaged in tug-of-war with, making it much more difficult to successfully steal an object from it compared to inPikmin 2. It cannot steal objects Oatchi hasswallowed, although note that swallowing an object a Giant Breadbug is actively carrying will enrage it and cause it to charge.

Notes

Olimar's notes

This gargantuan species of the greater breadbug family has a torso so perfectly square that it almost seems like it was formed in a mold. For a brief period after birth, the giant breadbug competes for food with smaller breadbugs, but upon reaching maturity it seeks out much larger prey. This is the primary reason that two species with similar feeding habits can coexist in the same habitat. Hordes of Pikmin appear to pose the only plausible threat to this massive creature's life.

Louie's notes

Although cooking this colossal beast yields a mountain of meat, every ounce of it is flavorless. Only suitable for intergalactic all-you-can-eat buffets.

Pikmin 2 Nintendo Player's Guide[edit]

Only purple Pikmin can stomp the Breadbug boss. The best way to damage it is to beat it in a game of tug-of-war. Have your Pikmin grab the item that the bug is trying to take into its hole, and carry the prize to the ship. When the ship sucks it in, the Breadbug will be sucked upward, too, and hit the bottom of the ship.

Dalmo's notes[edit]

Perfectly cooked, golden brown, and fluffy. It must be a fresh-baked loaf of bread. Oh, my mistake! This is the wildly unique Giant Breadbug, with the texture and vibrancy only a living creature can possess. Don't let your eyes and gut deceive you. This lumbering muffin might just take offense if you mistake it for a loaf of fresh bread!

Trivia[edit]

  • The Giant Breadbug is one of three enemies to not appear in theWistful Wild, the others being theWaterwraith and theToady Bloyster. All three can be found within thePerplexing Pool.
  • The Giant Breadbug, along with the helpless phase of the Waterwraith, and theTitan Dweevil, are the only bosses inPikmin 2 that have their ownmusic theme, instead of using the regular boss theme. This theme also appears in thePlunder Palace inPikmin 4, but stops when the two Giant Breadbugs are defeated, whereas inPikmin 2, it continues whether they are defeated or not.
  • InPikmin 4, a Giant Breadbug will not charge at the player's squad or Oatchi if collecting the item it's grabbing onto triggers a cutscene. This is most commonly seen by rescuing a castaway.
