TheFemale Sheargrub (ウジンコ♀?, lit.: "Tiny Maggot ♀") is anenemy found in thePikmin games. Unlike the members of theopposing gender, Female Sheargrubs are scavengers and do not attackleaders orPikmin, although they will still chase them. Their behavior, along with their light pink color and relatively small jaws, is the most distinctive difference between them and males of the same species. As with Male Sheargrubs, however, they eatbridges that were built on a previous day. They provide only one or two seeds, and thus are usually not worth bringing back to theOnion.

InPikmin 3, Female Sheargrubsregenerate health when they are underground, just like Male Sheargrubs. They can fully heal themselves in 30 seconds. When their health is at 20% or lower, they will return to their nest to bury and recover, and when they regenerate to 50%, they emerge and continue their chase, if there are leaders or Pikmin nearby. Thehealth wheel will always be visible above the ground when they are recovering health.

Behavior[edit]

When idle, Female Sheargrubs remain underground. Only when the player or Pikmin are near does the Female Sheargrub appear. It will emerge and follow either the player or any Pikmin nearby without attacking. Once a certain amount of damage has been done to them, they will retreat underground and heal up. InPikmin andPikmin 2, Female Sheargrubs will 'attack' unfolded bridges and deconstruct them. This doesn't happen inPikmin 3 andPikmin 4 as the bridges were changed from sticks to fragments and clay. Additionally, when a Female Sheargrub comes into contact with water, it instantly dies. This only occurs in the first two games.

Locations[edit]

Strategy[edit]

With Pikmin[edit]

Female Sheargrubs are harmless pests, so there's no risk of losing any Pikmin whilst fighting them. They only push Pikmin around. A single Pikmin thrown onto its back will take it out instantly, helped by thelock-on feature inPikmin 3,Pikmin 3 Deluxe andPikmin 4. A small squad of Pikmin is another option to quickly defeat the Sheargrub, and since they often appear in groups, swarming or charging them will defeat them all in a quick manner.

Alternate methods[edit]

Female Sheargrubs can often be found alongside theirmale counterparts, whichcan kill Pikmin, so having the leaderpunch the Sheargrubs is a valid method of attack as it minimizes potential Pikmin deaths. This method works with all games, although once their health gets low enough, they will retreat and heal up.Another way to defeat them, specifically inPikmin andPikmin 2 is by luring them into nearby bodies of water. They, along with Male Sheargrubs, take large amounts of damage from water, making it another valid strategy in defeating them. Finally,Oatchi'sRush at level 1, or twoChomps at level 1, can be used to instantly defeat the Sheargrub.

Notes

Olimar's voyage log

Today I've learned something new about these creatures' behavioral patterns. They are very vexing bugs-they chew apart the bridges that the Pikmin build! All the effort the Pikmin went to... I must watch for these pests.

Reel notes

Males of this species are purple and have an armored head.

Olimar's notes

The males of this species are purple and black creatures with tapered mouths, while the females are lighter in color and lack an armored exoskeleton. As with most mandiblards, these creatures have regressed to the point where they have lost both legs and wings. They can be seen crawling around on the ground and are believed to feed on the vegetable extracts from the congealed fluids of expired Pikmin.

Louie's notes

For an unforgettable quiche, slice this creature up and mix with four eggs, two vine-ripened tomatoes, diced zucchini, and generous handfuls of feta and swiss. Bake until crusty and golden. This beast is most flavorful if caught and cooked just after laying its eggs.

Alph's comments

Structural flaw: back
Weight: 1

It takes no time at all for them to emerge from their hiding places underground. They don't do much once they've surfaced, but you have to give them credit for being very efficient borers.

Brittany's comments

Have you ever had a friend who startled you every time they approached? Who always seemed to come out of nowhere and scare you? That's what these remind me of. They don't mean any harm, but I jump 10 feet whenever they show up.

Charlie's comments

The ability to hide underground and burst up to the surface whenever someone comes near, then retreat to recover again, just isn't fair. They'd be fearsome ambushers if they ever...you know...attacked.

Dalmo's notes[edit]

This little one's primary food source is secretions from Ambuloradices like Pikmin. To fill the bellies of so many Sheargrubs, there must be a healthy population of Ambuloradicis creatures in this world! It's through Sheargrubs like this that we get a glimpse of the hidden secrets of the planet.

Female sheargrubs are the weakest of the mandiblard family. All mandiblards feed on wooden bridges, so make sure that you exterminate the pests before the bugs undo your handiwork.

Their limbs have atrophied, so they crawl along the ground. Males and females differ in shape, where the purplish black ones with pointed jaw tips are the males, and the paler ones without a head shell are the females. They prefer to eat an agar-like substance secreted by Pikmin. They usually hide underground, suddenly coming out to attack prey when it gets close. They live in groups of about eight individuals.

Pikmin 2 Nintendo Player's Guide[edit]

Pale pink Sheargrubs pop out of the ground and distract your Pikmin, but they don't cause your troops any harm. They do, however, like to roll up constructed bridges. If you have the time, you can swarm and defeat the creatures with little effort and take them back to the Onions for two sprouts a pop.

Pikmin 3 Prima Guide[edit]

Like Male Sheargrubs, Female Sheargrubs spend most of their time under-ground. Unlike their male counterparts, however, Female Sheargrubs aren't equipped with pincers. When you uncover a group of Female Sheargrubs, throw one Pikmin onto each enemy.

A Sheargrub female. Its jaws are soft and cannot catch prey. When mature, it burrows into the soil to form a pupa, lays eggs in the pupa without emerging, and dies soon afterwards.

Feature #1: Emerging from the ground

They usually live underground, but emerge above ground to feed.
