TheAstringent Clump (オオダマニガミバシリ?, lit.: "Bitterness Blitzing Big Ball") is afruit inPikmin 3, and atreasure inPikmin 4. It is agrapefruit, and gives theKoppaite explorers two bottles of juice (one inUltra-Spicy mode). There are two found throughoutPikmin 3, one in theGarden of Hope and the other in theDistant Tundra. This is one of few fruits that does not appear in eitherMission Mode orBingo Battle, though it does appear inPikmin 3 Deluxe'sSide Stories. InPikmin 4, it can be found in theSecluded Courtyard and theDoppelgänger's Den. It is similar in appearance to theCrunchy Deluge, despite being a different fruit.

Collecting the fruit[edit]

The strategies shown are just suggestions.

Astringent Clump
Location of the Astringent Clump in the Garden of Hope.

To find the Astringent Clump in theGarden of Hope, you must go to the area in the northwest with theZest Bomb andelevator platforms. There is anelectric gate blocking the way to the fruit, which needs to be destroyed first. The Astringent Clump takes 10Pikmin to carry but a minimum of 32 are needed to complete the puzzle normally. First, throw 22 Pikmin onto the high stack of bricks between the two elevator pairs (this is made easy withYellow Pikmin, otherwise they can be thrown from the left elevator). Raise 2 leaders up on the left elevator so that one can be thrown to the high stack of bricks. Have the lower 2 leaders go all the way to the right to throw 10 other Pikmin and a leader onto the elevator on the ground. Switch to the leader on the high stack of bricks and throw them onto the elevator with thedata file. The leader with the other 10 Pikmin can now throw them to the fruit.

Though you're meant to use the platforms, they can be skipped entirely by locking onto the fruit and chargingWinged Pikmin at it before the game stops the lock-on. InPikmin 3 Deluxe, the Winged Pikmin get stuck more often than not, but it is possible by positioning the leader against the easternmost corner of the block tower and charging from there. Furthermore, when using this method, the destruction of the electric gate can be skipped entirely, as the Winged Pikmin will fly above it while returning the fruit.

See also:Spotty Bulbear strategy.

An Astringent Clump is found in theDistant Tundra, inside the cave that leads from the main part of the area to the outside segment whereCharlie first crash-landed. To get to it, you need to open up abamboo gate usingWinged Pikmin.Red and Winged Pikmin are recommended for this area, as there are multiplefire hazards, includingFiery Blowhogs andfire geysers. There is also aSpotty Bulbear patrolling the room past the bamboo gate, with someDwarf Bulbears following close behind it. At the end of the room is acrystal wall, next to which, on a ledge, is the slightly buried Astringent Clump. In the area behind the crystal wall, which can either be accessed by destroying the panel with a small group ofRock Pikmin or taking a short path around it with a few Dwarf Bulbears, there are tenbomb rocks. These can be used to take out the enemies in the room and to quicklydig up the fruit. After killing theSpotty Bulbear, carry the fruit back to theS.S. Drake.

Collecting the treasure[edit]

The strategies shown are just suggestions.

Secluded Courtyard[edit]

An Astringent Clump is hanging from a cobweb near the central north point of sublevel 3 of theSecluded Courtyard. There is awater spout beneath it that should be taken care of before attempting to transport the treasure. The nearbySunsquish and the water spout on the way to theS.S. Beagle should also be dealt with. Afterward, to collect this treasure, you must throw 12 Pikmin at it.

Doppelgänger's Den[edit]

There is an Astringent Clump completely submerged in the pool in the center of sublevel 1 of theDoppelgänger's Den. It is guarded by twoSkeeterskates, which should be defeated before attempting to collect it. To collect this treasure, you must throw 12 Pikmin at it.

Notes

Brittany's notes

US version US version
A little sweet, a little sour, but mostly BITTER. Alph can't cope with the bitterness and wants me to sweeten it somehow, but I have to say it's growing on me. Maybe he'll mature into it?
European version European version
A little sweet, a little sour, but mostly just bitter. Alph can't cope with the bitterness and asked me to sweeten it somehow, but I have to say it's growing on me. Maybe it's one of those refined tastes he'll learn to like when he gets a bit older?

Schnauz's notes[edit]

It takes a refined palate to appreciate all this fruit has to offer. It is at once sweet, sour, bitter, and even spicy. But those capable of pushing through the complex, slightly painful taste experience will find themselves greatly rewarded.

Olimar's notes[edit]

The night after I ate this fruit, I had a dream in which I saw lots of them growing, clustered together on a tree. If I were able to grow and harvest that many, we'd never run out of food. I suppose we won't know what's possible until I plant the first seed...

Louie's notes[edit]

Perfect for the moments when all that will satisfy you is a mouthful of bitterness.
