Notes

The first and only issue of the notorious literary magazine repeatedly cited in Wilde's 1895 trials. This copy, number 88 of 100 only, retains the rare original wrappers.

The magazine contains the first appearance of Wilde's collection of aphorisms, "Phrases and Philosophies for the Use of the Young", as well as two poems by Lord Alfred Douglas ("In Praise of Shame" and "Two Loves") and the editor John Francis Bloxam's anonymously published "The Priest and the Acolyte". Bloxam's homoerotic drama sparked instant controversy on publication. It was assumed by many to be Wilde's work, and the author faced cross-examination over its content at his libel trial. Douglas's poem "Two Loves" ends with his famous description of "the love that dare not speak its name".

Description

Quarto.

Original green wrappers printed in dark green. Housed in a custom brown quarter morocco chemise.

Spine repaired with a little loss, wrappers lightly worn at extremities, closed tears discreetly reinforced with Japanese tissue. A very good copy.
