KISSIMMEE – With a little more experience and a lot of Zack Greinke, Conway captured its first Senior League World Series championship Saturday at Osceola County Stadium.
After a second-place finish last year, host Conway capped an undefeated tournament with a 10-2 victory over Latin America before a partisan crowd of 500.
Conway bolted to an 8-0 lead by the third inning and had no problem beating the team of Venezuelan 15 and 16-year-olds. Jayson Weir pitched a complete game and struck out seven batters, while shortstop Greinke led the offense with three hits and two RBIs.
“These pitchers were throwing me curveballs every pitch, so I knew exactly what was coming,” said Greinke, a sophomore who hit .494 last season at Apopka High. “We just crushed the ball every time.”
Greinke’s explosive bat and strong arm played key roles throughout the five-game tournament.
“He probably batted close to .700 for the tournament,” said Conway Manager Neal Carroll.
In the final, Conway collected 11 hits and benefitted from two dropped fly balls which led to six unearned runs. Latin America starting pitcher Johanne Teran was knocked out in the first inning, and Conway ripped three Venezuelan relievers.
Third baseman Cameron Abel scored twice and collected two hits, two RBIs and two walks for Conway. Matt Carroll, playing left field, and first baseman Zac McCamie also had two hits each.
Weir helped himself at the plate, reaching base three times and scoring twice. .
“I started off feeling not so good,” Weir said. “But when my team started hitting the ball, it got my confidence up.”
Conway’s 14-player roster consisted primarily of Boone High students, with the exception of Greinke and Carroll, who attends Colonial.
This is Central Florida’s second Senior League title in the tournament’s 39-year history. Altamonte Springs won in 1984.
“The boys played real well,” Neal Carroll said. “They pretty much played up to their expectations. Maybe coming in second last year, this was a little redemption.”
