Biography: Merrick Garland is the current United States Attorney General. He has had a long career in law, including roles as a federal judge and prosecutor.

Garland graduated from Harvard College in 1974 and Harvard Law School in 1977. After his studies, he clerked for Judge Henry Friendly and Supreme Court Justice William Brennan. Garland then worked at a private law firm and as a federal prosecutor.

In the 1990s, Garland led the investigation and prosecution of the Oklahoma City bombing case. This high-profile work brought him national attention. In 1997, PresidentBill Clinton appointed Garland to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit.

In 2016, PresidentBarack Obama nominated Garland to the Supreme Court. The Republican-controlled Senate, however, refused to hold confirmation hearings. This unprecedented move prevented Garland from joining the Supreme Court.

Despite this setback, Garland continued his work on the Court of Appeals. He gained a reputation as a moderate and centrist judge. In 2021, PresidentJoe Biden appointed Garland as the United States Attorney General.

As Attorney General, Garland focuses on civil rights and voting rights issues. He also oversaw the investigation into the January 6, 2021 attack on the United States Capitol.
