Biography: Angelo Giuseppe Roncalli, known as Pope John XXIII, was the head of the Catholic Church from 1958 to 1963. He is best remembered for convening the Second Vatican Council, which brought significant changes to the Church. His warm personality and efforts to modernize Catholicism earned him the nickname "the Good Pope."

Roncalli was born in 1881 to a family of sharecroppers in Sotto il Monte, Italy. He was ordained a priest in 1904 and later served as a bishop and papal diplomat. In 1958, at the age of 76, he was elected Pope, surprising many with his energy and vision for change.

As Pope, John XXIII called the Second Vatican Council in 1962, aiming to update the Church's practices and relationships with the modern world. He worked to improve relations with other Christian denominations and Jews, removing offensive language about Jews from Catholic liturgy. He also issued important encyclicals, including "Pacem in Terris" (1963), which addressed world peace.

John XXIII expanded and internationalized the College of Cardinals, the group responsible for electing new popes. He engaged in dialogue with Communist countries in Eastern Europe through his "Ostpolitik" policy, which sought to improve relations between the Church and these nations. Pope John XXIII died in 1963, leaving a legacy of openness and reform in the Catholic Church.

In 2014,Pope Francis canonized John XXIII as a saint, alongside PopeJohn Paul II. His feast day is celebrated on October 11, marking the anniversary of the Second Vatican Council's opening.
