Biography: American singer-songwriter, actress, film producer and director Barbra Streisand has sold over 145 million albums worldwide. She is one of the few people to have won an Oscar, Tony, Emmy and a Grammy award.
Streisand began her career as a night club singer before becoming a star on Broadway. She released her first studio album "The Barbra Streisand Album" in 1963 and it went on to win two Grammys, including Best Album.
Streisand won her first of five Emmy Awards for her television special "My Name is Barbra" in 1964. For her debut film role asFanny Brice in the 1968 film "Funny Girl", which she had played on Broadway, she won the Oscar for Best Actress. This win was the only tie for best actress in Academy Awards history -Katharine Hepburn also won.
Other successful films followed including in "The Way We Were" (1973) oppositeRobert Redford and "A Star is Born" (1976) withKris Kristofferson.
Streisand drew on her Jewish heritage as the creative force behind "Yentl" (1983) as co-writer, director, producer and star. She won a Golden Globe for Best Director for the film, the first woman to do so.
Streisand returned to live shows in the 1990s breaking box office records around the world.
