The Vellara alphabet is a script for Albanian that first appeared in the early 19th century. It is named after a Greek doctor and writer, Ioannis Vilaras (1771–1823), who wrote the manuscript in which the script first appeared. Ioannis Vilaras, or Jan Vellarai in Albanian, became the physician to Veli, the son of Ali Pasha Tepelena, the ruler of Albania, in 1801. He is known mainly for writing poetry in Greek, but also spoke Albanian fluently.
The Vellara script is also known as the Vellara alphabet, orAlfabeti i Vëllarait in Albanian. It is based mainly on the Latin script, and to a lesser extent on the Greek and Cyrillic scripts.
