Mari (марий йылме)

Mari is a Uralic language spoken by about 451,000 people mainly in Mari El Republic in the west of the Russian Federation, and also in Bashkortostan, Tatarstan, Udmurtia, Perm and other parts of the Russian Federation. There are three varieties of Mari:Hill Mari,Meadow Mari andNorthwestern Mari, with significant differences between them.

Mari is an official language of the Mari El Republic, along with Russian. It is taught in schools, and in some colleges over half the subjects are taught through the medium of Mari.

Hill Mari (Кырык мары йӹлмӹ)

Hill Mari is spoken in the Gornomariysky, Yurinsky and Kilemarsky districts of Mari El Republic. In 2012 there were about 30,000 speakers of Hill Mari, which is also known as Cheremis, High Mari, Highland Mari, Mari-Hills or Western Mari.

Meadow Mari (олыкмарла)

Meadow Mari is spoken mainly in the Mari El Republic, and also in the Bashkortostan republic, Kirov province and in the Perm Krai. In 2012 there were about 414,000 speakers of Meadow Mari, which is also known as Cheremis, Eastern Mari, Low Mari, Lowland Mari, Lugovo Mari, Mari, Mari-Woods or Woods Mari.

Northwestern Mari (Йөтнӫмӓл-кӓсвел маре йӹлмӹ)

Northwestern Mari is spoken in Yaransky, Tuzhinsky, Kiknursky and Sanchursky districts of Kirov Oblast, Tonshayevsky, Sharangsky and Tonkinsky districts of Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, and in Kilemarsky and Medvedevsky districts of the Mari El Republic. In 2012 there were about 7,000 speakers of Northwestern Mari, which had no literary standard until 1995. It has no official status.
