Baraba Tatar (Парабачы / Parabaçı)

Baraba Tatar is a variety of Siberian Tatar, a member of the Kipchak-Nogay branch of the Turkic language family. It is spoken by fewer than 8,000 people in the Novosibirsk Oblast in the Western Siberia region in the south of Russia. Most speakers of Baraba Tatar are elderly: younger people speak Russian and Volga-Ural Tatar, which are taught in schools. As a result, Baraba Tatar is considered severely endangered.

Baraba Tatar is also known as Baraba dialect or Paraba Tatar. Until 1928 Baraba Tatar was written with the Arabic script. From 1928 to 1938 it was written with the Latin alphabet, and since 1938 it has been written with the Cyrillic alphabet.
