Merle Dandridge, currently starring as our newest lady of the underground, the queen of spring, Persephone herself fromHadestown joins us On The Couch this week following her first month on stage at the Walter Kerr Theatre.

Dandridge is no stranger to being on stage, originating roles such as Kala inTarzan,and Papa Ge inOnce On This Island.Speaking of Once On This Island,Merle starred alongside our current Eurydice, Hailey Kilgoreover 7 years ago. A lovely reunion I’m sure.

What do you consider to be your best asset?
My ability and desire to learn

What is your favorite food?
Anything homecooked with family around the table

What is your favorite condiment?
Sesame oil

What is your current obsession?
Rebuilding my body post surgery and the resilience/joy that comes with personal peace

If you could give up one of your vices, what would it be?
Coke Zero. Man, do I love it!

What is the one professional accomplishment you long for most?
Running the New York City marathon. It was a huge inspiration to me when i moved to NYC in 1998 and has remained on my bucket list every since. I don’t know if my body will allow it, but I’m working toward it. Also, I recently got my black belt in Taekwondo, so I look forward to achieving the next level there.

What is the one thing you waste too much money on?
One thing? I’m the worst.

What is the one activity you waste too much time doing?
It used to be scrolling, but I’ve cut back significantly there. Now, I’m obsessed with the Duolingo diamond level tournament. I will stand outside of a dinner party to finish a level up. Ridiculous.

What do you consider to be the single greatest threat to your health?
Worrying and lack of sleep.

What’s the single best trait you inherited or learned from your parents?
Discipline and hard work.

What’s the single worst trait you inherited or learned from your parents?
Lack of communication

What in the world most thrills you?
Travel…or cuddles with my pup, Margaret

What current trend in popular culture most irritates you?
Irritates is a strong word. I try not to waste much energy on that emotion. But I am CURIOUS about the trend to constantly video oneself. It’s just not for me. I think I’m too private.

What was the most embarrassing moment you’ve ever experienced on the job?
I’ve got a book’s worth

What is your favorite place in the world?
Sitting around the table with family.

What is the most important trait you seek in a romantic partner?
Growth

Do you prefer the company of dogs or cats?
Hmm. I grew up with cats and Guinea pigs, but my last 2 pets have been dogs. My dog, Margaret, often acts like a cat though. She’s a well-rounded gal.

What would have to happen to make today the best day of your life?
A big career achievement with every single family member and beloved friend in attendance. We’d leave the party early and have a cookout playing music, singing and dancing.
