Herbert Gruber won a silver medal in the four-man event at the 1968 Winter Olympics in Grenoble, riding alongsideReingold Durnthaler, Erwin Thaler, and Josef Eder. Almost the same team, with Adolf Koxeder replacing Eder, had also won a silver medal at the 1967 European Championships. In 1971 Gruber added a bronze medal in two-man at the World Championships.
