Trinidad and Tobago established a working committee in 1946 which was first provisionally and later fully recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Trinidad and Tobago has competed continuously at the Olympic Games since its début in 1948, competing only as Trinidad through 1956 and in 1964. In 1960, it had one cyclist, one track & field athlete, and two yachtsmen competing in a combined team with Jamaica and Barbados under the name of theWest Indies Federation, termed the Antilles by the Roma organizing committee. Though the West Indies Federation won two medals, no Trinidad athlete was a medal winner in 1960.
Trinidad and Tobago competed in the Olympic Winter Games for the first time in 1994 at Lillehammer, and competed again in 1998 and 2002. Trinidad and Tobago has won 19 Olympic medals and three golds: 15 in track & field athletics (with all three golds), three in weightlifting, and one in swimming.
Its first gold medal occurred in 1976 whenHasely Crawford won themen’s 100 metres in track & field athletics. In 2012Keshorn Walcott seemingly became the second gold medalist for Trinidad and Tobago after winning themen’s javelin throw, but the nation actually later added a gold medal in the2008 men’s 4x100 relay after the disqualification of Jamaica for a re-testing doping positive byNesta Carter. However, the most medals by a Trinbagonian have been won by the sprinterAto Boldon with one silver and three bronzes in 1996 and 2000. He is closely followed by runnerRichard Thompson, with one gold and two silvers.
