Description

The National Olympic Committee of Singapore was formed in 1947 and recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) at the IOC session in London in 1948. Singapore has competed independently at 17 Olympic Games since 1948, missing only 1964 and 1980. In 1964, Singaporean athletes also competed at the Olympic Games, but under the banner ofMalaysia after joining the federation withMalaya,North Borneo (Sabah), and Sarawak. On 5 May 1964 the NOCs of Malaya, Singapore, Sabah, and Sarawak formed the Olympic Council of Malaysia. Singapore left the Malaysian Federation in 1965 and its NOC was again recognized by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) as independent on 7 October of the same year at the IOC Session in Madrid.

In 1960,Tan Howe Liang won Singapore’s first Olympic medal, a silver inlightweight weightlifting. The most successful athlete has beenFeng Tian Wei who has won a silver and two bronze medals in table tennis. Through 2018, Singaporean athletes have won 5 Olympics medals, including one gold byJoseph Schooling in2016 men’s 100 metre butterfly swimming.

As one would expect of a country whose monthly mean temperature only varies from 26.8° C (80.2° F) (January) to 28.6° C (83.5° F) (May), Singapore does not have much of a winter sports history. It first competed at the Olympic Winter Games in 2018, represented by one athlete, female short-track speedskaterCheyenne Goh, who finished 28th in the women’s 1,500 metres. Although Goh was born in Singapore and has Singaporean citizenship, she was raised in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, where she learned to speedskate.
